Bugga, I wish i tuned-in yesterday so i could have answered the Savusavu approach, it's the only one I recognise. Lol. It's an interesting one through the saddle and then a quick drop below the level of the neighbouring huts.
Sounds like a good way to hour build propelled. Did you hire the Cessna whilst there? What are the rates like?

Hi truthinbeer,
Yes, enjoyed the approach into savusavu.. Learnt quite a bit over there eg interesting airstrips, weather, overwater flying etc.
Yes, completed those 50 or so hrs and a few training flights at pacific flying school. I also sat and passed my cpl flight test there also (still need to convert it to oz).. Rates were quite reasonable, approx 170/ hr aud solo hire (c172r)
Validation of aus ppl was quite eAsy too.
What did u fly into savusavu?

Yer life styles of the rich and famous, flew Jim Carey, Celeine Dion, Terry Hatcher and a few others I can not remember out there. Was owned by a guy named Harrison Gilmore a Canadian or American. Glen Shorrick had a house there also and got to meet the 12th man Billy Bermingham when he was staying with them, he is one funny man! None of us mortals will ever be able to stay there!

Flew into Savusavu as a passenger onBeechcraft BE-65 Queenair operated by Sun Air. Can't wait to do it for myself one day. I like the idea of hour building in Fiji and may consider doing just that, the experience would be worthwhile. The Savusavu Hot Springs Hotel is the place to stay, and whilst there you can take a casual membership at the yacht club, a great place to sink a few and have a sing along Fiji-style.

Just an Iphone image or 2,
When to turn around.
about now.
i loved the way the low level CNB engulfed the ridgetop right before my eyes loaded with plenty of lightning.

That's the problem with having inexperienced flying instructors who have never experienced it themselves! They're too scared to take their students out on anything but CAVOK days.
When I did my licence, most of my instructors were quite experienced, so I got to experience all that crap weather and make my own decisions, but with guidance beside me.

Yep, whenever a rain shower came through MB there was mass panic amongst all aircraft in the circuit to get back on the ground and safety.
As opposed to our CFI who would charge through the school and say 'Get em airborne, get some practice with wet runway ops.' You should have seen his face when there was a wet runway AND a crosswind. The man was in heaven.

Haha I like the sound of that CFI Jack. Is he still around?
I found that even though I felt like I had been adequately exposed to weather decisions there is nothing quite like doing it all by yourself for the first few times! I started out super conservative (FEW050, wow that looks hairy ) and each decision made since has been a learning experience.

Going through some old photos and found these. Sadly, as everyone will know, the chooper crashed last year with the loss of three extroadinary newsmen. (Gary wasn't flying the day these were taken.)
