I am here!

Interesting Aeroplane..... tell us more about it. I do not find it that asthetically apealling, but I have heard the Dr say before, Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder!!

Has it always had that colour scheme? Or what may have happened to it to warrant the "That was..."

The Robin had an interesting history in Oz. They were built in Canada. Had the same engine as the PA28-161 - were a two seat fully aerobatic aircraft. Fun to fly and this one was on cross-hire to the Canberra Aero Club.

The company in Canada decided to stop production and a Canadian entrepenuer decided to buy the last (I think) about 8 aircraft and the moulds and jigs and came to Oz with his attractive tall blonde third wife (he was short and fat) and in 1984-5 embarked on a Oz marketing program. They cost at that time about A$35,000 VFR. They were all black and gold.

LXX one was bought by a friend of mine. The Sydney Aerobatic School bought a few and I think one went to Adelaide. One of the SAS regos was SEX.

One was involved in a fatal accident at Sydney and another was written off as the crew filmed their own crash when they failed to recover from a spin. It was piloted by someone who was an editor of a popular aviation magazine who ended up replacing me at the CAA - in safety promotion.

That was about it.

The smooth talking Canadian went broke but the aircraft stayed on.

I would suspect that there are about 3-4 still flying - must check.

I had some fun in it at flying comps where this pic was taken. From memory this was a forced landing and I would have failed - the fence was dropped by the team as I would have taken it out. It just looks like I am going to get 50 points. But good practice.

Barks.

PS: I like the V35 - reminds me of the XK140 Jag.

Another one crashed in Jandakot a few years ago. Ran out of fuel. There is no spinner in your pic!

I think the R2160 in Adelaide was VH-SXY if my memory serves me correctly.

I was under the impression all of them had xXY registrations initially.

Dr

I am sure you are right.

It was SXY - But I am getting a bit feeble in my old age so cut me some slack.

Well I tell a lie - its actual a good glass of shiraz which is causing the problem.

Now lets get back to seeing current and good pics being taken by all you guys out there.

The spinner comes off all single engine deriviatives - as do the spats.

They always look good in the PR pics - but after using them for a few weeks the plastic falls off.

Hey Doc,

VH-SEX, was a PA-30 originally bought by Aircraft Rentals at BK, and owned by one Mr J.Cougle, way back around '66.

All clients were asked to be very careful when booking the acft and NOT to ask the delightful 'June' for .....

At the same time he also reserved the regos SIN and SON, and the idea of the time was to park them outside on the flight line - in that order....
SIN was a PA31 which still exists.
SON was to be a Seneca.

Good to see the ole' SEX still active!

Cheers

The ALPHA R2160 was manufactured in Hamilton NZ up until last year when Alpha went into receivership...the Waikato Aeroclub was one of the launch customers and received 3 Alpha ZK-WCD, WKF, WJH (W-signifying the Waikato Aero Club, and the two following letter ar initials of significant members in the club's history).

I believe Alpha has recently been sold by the receivers and the factory at NZHN will again start turning out the R2160's.

Tinny,

Some hints.

If what I have been told is correct CD refers to two people, JH is a woman. That might be Mr D in the L/H seat.

GRIFFO, for a time back in the late 70's there was also an Auster J1B at Warwick, VH-ASK. We put pressure on the local flying school to get VH-FOR for their latest training aircraft so that we could line them up as: ASK FOR SEX !

Definitely sold. Not sure about starting up the Alpha line in HN again though - rumour has it it is going offshore to the cheapest labour in the world.....to my knowledge there has been no shoulder tapping or word on employment opportunities amongst the previous staff.

A long time ago, ZK-SEX was a C-207 operated by a well-known Mt Cook operator. I think it wound up in Te Anau or Queenstown for a while after that, not sure.
