Miners are having to dredge the bottom of the barrel for suitable employees as well.

Exactly. Back in 2000 when I was the Chief Pilot for a large all twin charter company in FNQ, we had a number of contracts with various government departments and private companies. They had a requirement of, if my memory serves me correctly 2000 hrs total time, 750 hrs multi command and 100 hrs command night experience. We lost a number of drivers that year, infact we had a 100% turnover because all the majors were employing like drunken sailors. We advertised nationally over a number of weeks for new pilots but hardly got any worthwhile replies. There were plenty of resumes from people that didn’t come close to our minimum requirements but virtually none from the experience level we were looking for. So ladies and gentlemen Australia does see pilot shortages but only in experienced drivers as they are mopped up by the majors faster than they can be replaced. There never has been nor will there ever be a shortage of new CPL holders looking for their first job.

Interesting you should say that 404, I was saying exactly the same thing to one of my colleagues just last week, the whole industry is showing a lot of similarities with 2000 and early 2001. Let's hope there are no major events to bring things to a halt this time.
Cheers, HH.
