Hi Wilsoni,

I was based in Kiunga and flew ISK from Nov 87 to Jul 88. I may have given you a ride. I knew Mike Butler well enough at the time.

Cheers Bozzo

P2-GKN

Bit late coming in on the topic but mention of GKN and the P2-ISF incident next day brought back some sad memories of what was a bad few days for Talair.
GKN with pilot Ray Hoffman plus 4 pax went missing enroute from Tari to Mendi on 19July 1980. That afternoon a search commenced but with Mendi socked in the search aircraft including myself in P2-ISF diverted to Hagen to overnight and try again next day at first light. At Hagen we were given C206 SEJ to resume the search while ISF was to ferry back to Mendi with Bob Davie as pilot plus several pax to resume normal ops from there. We both taxied out in the dark for a first light takeoff but there had been a heavy dew that night and the wet windscreens plus the rising sun made vis pretty poor. We departed first and a short time later heard a distressed radio call to Hagen Tower from Bob saying that he had had an accident and needed assistance. As mentioned this was due to passenger,Kerry Foley ( who was well known to everyone at Talair )walking into a revolving propeller. The circumstances were basically that Bob had come to a stop due to the poor vis and was considering taxying back in to dry his windsceens.Kerry on hearing this apparently announced that she had a towel or cloth and they could use that. Before anyone could react she opened one of the Islanders side doors and rushed forward straight through the revolving propeller. She was killed instantly. Kerry grew up in PNG,her Dad was an ex-Kiap and brother Chris was Talair base manager at Mendi so she was very used to being around aircraft. No-one will ever no why she did what she did but it's happened before and has happened since.
GKN was found by a chopper later that day on the south side of the Tari Gap and had some repercussions for Talair as one of the passengers killed was the Premier of the Southern Highlands,Andrew Andaija. Word went out that there was to be payback against Talair at Mendi but in the end that didn't happen and a rival clan was blamed for putting 'puri puri' on the crashed aircraft.
Helly Tschuchnigg was dispatched from Talair Goroka to offer compensation to the family including Australian Private schooling for their son.Not sure if that actually happened or not.
Also ,as mentioned Bob Davie after leaving PNG for some time returned to later die in the crash of Islander ISH near Omkolai on 13 Jan.1984. A very sad period for all concerned.

Hi Balus,

Can you really start an Islander with a rope?
Yes you can. I have done it successfully a couple of times and in fact the prop spinners on the NCA islanders had the lip at the base bent flat from the rope crushing it when being pulled like an old lawn mower to get them going.

As the Popp pilot for NCA you were pretty much left to your own resources when it came to a mechanical problem. Usually if something broke at an outport it could take hours, if not a day or two, before some sort of support could be got to you.

As it wasn't a rare occurrence for the starter motor bendix to shear all the drive teeth off (lots of starts on those things) or a crappy battery to die I used to carry a length of rope coiled up and stuffed under the seat and have used it to successfully start an Islander. The biggest problem was hanging on to the rope as the pax would value a piece of rope highly and would try to disappear it regularly. If you asked them for a piece of rope they would duck into the jungle and come back with a piece of vine for you. I have tried the jungle rope to start an islander but it was never strong enough and always broke.

The technique as I remember it was to allow the motor to cool a bit, as hot the compression was too high and they were a bitch to start anyway. Take said piece of rope and wrap it around the base of the spinner hub in front of the prop crossing the first few wraps over so that they locked the rope down onto the spinner. Get as many people as were willing to hang on the rope as possible and brief them through the agent to run and pull the rope at a slight forward angle and not to stop until the rope came free of the prop. Jump in prime it up and get them to go. It would usually take a few goes and the biggest danger was that the guys on the rope would stop when the engine caught and the prop would catch the rope and wrap it around the prop. You'd have to shut down and start again from letting the motor cool down if this happened! The carb'd Islanders were easier to start like this than the fuel injected ones.

It was all pretty funny for the locals as they'd usually done it before and thought it was a great laugh. I used to s#%t myself that they'd walk into the prop if the rope got caught up and was usually very happy to get it done and be gone asap without incident. Fortunately I only had to do it a couple of times and as Murphy was always hanging around in PNG I would usually have a problem like this just after my rope got knicked and get stuck anyway!

I guess this is better than the single engine T/O and hope the drop off into the valley below with enough air speed to windmill the prop will start the engine...some may remember this but the outcome did not quite go to plan same operator

Piccies from the past. Someone spoke of the 1969 London-Sydney Air Race. This is Alpha Tango Zulu I belive the winner of said race. Not sure if I have posted it here before. Photo circa 1971. Sorry posted it on another thread here earlier. C'est la vie. Probably a senior moment.

selbang airstrip

Located not too far east of Tabubil, if memory serves correctly from Tabubil heading east through the chute you have the Gulgubip and Olsobip valley then you'd pass over Kuyol/Bolovip and not far past that to the north is Selbang. If you carried on a little further you'd come across Biangabip slightly to the south.

Details I have for it are RWY 08/26, 10.5% slope over 360 metres at elevation 4600ft.

Selbang is 30-35nm East of Tabubil, South East of "The Wall". Short and quite steep, it's on the southern edge of the "Bips and Mins".

SELBANG AIRSTRIP

I have a page of PNG AIP dated, 29th. August 1985, which shows the same strip details as provided by firethelaser's post. It also gives strip coordinates of 05 19'S, 141 45'E. If you look up these coordinates on Google Earth you can see an open area beside a river/creek but the imagery is not that good. At 05 19'10"S
141 45'30"E there appears to to be an overgrown airstrip but the length and direction do not agree with the published details of Selbang.

PX don't fly Goroka - Madang according to their schedule. Looks like APNG may fly Goroka - Lae - Madang?

Never was much traffic between Goroka and Madang.

In my day they did and at 300+ Kts most of the way saw the FO working like a drovers dog.
Only sector more fun was Vanimo to Jayapura.
That was a 'Capt only' sector too... mainly because the Capt's couldn't keep up with the checklists and R/T workload if the FO flew!!

Liklik, I think Mal Smith's 'Airlink' was the last to run GKA-MAG RPT and that folded years ago. You will probably still find Mal at Pacific Helicopters in GKA though. Adventist Aviation Services next door or MAF over on the 'West Side' would probably be able to charter you in turbine comfort if that is something the budget can afford?!

Enjoy your visit. I hope it doesn't disappoint you too much. It is not the same PNG these days...

On 16.05.09 I posted on "Aviation History and Nostalgia" a request for photos of Caribou A4-264 overrun of Tufi Airstrip in 1971. Since 2010 I've been helping the local people with an ecotourism project and I'm still seeking photos of the event but haven't located any at all. Not even one. Didn't anyone involved have a camera at the time? I was on leave when it happened.

Kiap Doug. Ask the pilot direct - I think he still works for CASA!

A4-264 was pranged again at Camden, NSW on 4th July 1986 and is now (or was) a training aid:
