PNG CASA jobs
Last Fridays Australian paper advertised for Flight Ops Inspectors and Team leader. Its seems they have neither there at the moment-there was an air of desperation in the ad. PGK370,000 sounded like a lot and I contemplated applying. Reality set when I did the conversion!! I remember the days when a Kina would buy you AUD1.30. Don't suppose they are going to get too many high quality applicants for AUD145,000.
Watched a couple of short videos on Youtube on tribal fighting in PNG of late and the proliferation of guns in the Highlands-scary stuff.

The banara of yesteryear did little lethal damage during tribal fights but now its Mogadishu in the highlands.

Enormous waterfall
Does anyone here, flying in the area southeast of Mt. Michael, southwest of Tarabo and pretty due south of Gimi, recall seeing an enormous waterfall or rapids, possibly on the yani river at the location marked on the chart? My father described this waterfall in his memoires. He was taking part in a reconaissance flight in that area in February 1959. They were traveling in a Cessna 170 and could hear the thunder of the rapids above the sound of the ac engine (I´ve never flown in 170, but can´t imagine it being very quiet in the cabin).
Another spectacular scene viewed during this flight, must have been further west, southeast of Mt.Karimui. He describes a shear, nearly vertical wall of about 900ft height, running pretty much due north to south as far as they could see from the aircraft. He describes it as red clay or rock, with barely any vegetation growing on it.
So if anyone remembers seeing this, or even better, would have any photograhs of it, please let me know. Here or as PM.

The 'wall' you refer to has been mentioned here before, its on the tip of my tongue but I can't for the life of me remember it, something like the heldenburg wall. I'm sure chuck will put you right. Always thought that it could be marketed to base jumpers as the final jump ;-). You could have a two day tour (amazing race style), the first night adventure seekers could be dumped at jacksons with no money or
(PGK2) and they have to get their brown wings and do a breath test to make sure they drank 2 doz white cans, the next morning they could fight over a seat in a 40 year old 206 to a purpose built 17% slope, 300m, one way strip at the top of the wall, they have a national pack their shute for the base jump, they can chew buai at the bottom and then walk to the nearest town to catch a pmv down the highlands highway to stay the night at the five star hotel in lae, better known as the NCA compound (after planet rockape, post office compulsory Friday nite entertainment) reckon the survivor should win a mil.
How do we get the youth of today and current png drivers to post on here? I know ISP connections are still buggerup and expensive, but I spend more time on youtube lookin for the latest movies (a picture says a thousand words) at the same time can't understand some of the winners on youtube that post their flightsim footage of landing at a bush strip. As if it's the same! Would rather go surf some pron than watch someones flightsim wet dream. They obviously aren't 'enuff'

Is anyone here currently flying in Bougainville, specifically Panguna-Empress Augusta Bay area? If possible, I'd be interested in any pics of the Jaba-Kawerong river. I worked there in the early '70s on the sedimentation from the mine, & would be interested in seeing what it's like now. Is it still a grey mess, has it all been washed out to sea or is it overgrown. Any info would be appreciated.

Troppo the Hindenburg Wall is in the Western Highlands. I have flown a LOT around the area of that map and I am sure I have seen the feature asked about - but then spectacular waterfalls and river rapids etc were VERY common in the PNG highlands so I have no specific memory of those ones. I do remember a HUGE river/rapids west of there that just disappeared down a huge hole and went underground for miles before reappearing. Such is the nature of limestone formations which abound in PNG.

Problem is that they have only got a couple left and some of them are in their 70's. What they need in there is some younger blood with a good knowledge of how the industry in PNG operates, this could be hard given the job movement in PNG for experienced pilots at the moment. Coupled with this, I don't think they do much flying these days either as their King Air hasn't flown for about 10 years. I recon if they jacked up the salary a bit and pegged it to the AUD or the USD they might be able to attract some high quality applicants, which they (And the industry) really needs too move away from the self regulation method that has existed in PNG for years.
Maisk Rotum, I think you might be right about the air of desperation, especially given the fact that CASA PNG are now audited by ICAO and the like on a regular basis, not to mention the fact that most of the larger operators in PNG have doubled their fleet sizes over the past 3 years, and other new operators are trying to get AOCs and import aircraft etc. More aircraft and AOCs mean more surveillance.

It used to be in the Western Province, separating the Telefomin valley from Tabubil and the "'bips".

I always thought the of Western Province as the flat lands south of Tububil between Gulf province and the Irian Border while the Western Highlands went from Chimbu Province to the Irian border - but there you go.

For what it is worth, the Western Highlands ends about Mt Giluwe, and the Southern Highlands is located between the WHP and Western Province.

Chimbu,not to sure about the HK bit but I'm sure he has done a bit of venison recovery in his younger days. I believe he is with Heliniugini these days. Top bloke and a true gentleman.
