Pretty sure that the Pitts was owned by Rob Wood (Diwai), ex PX, but vaguely remember it being in Hagen as well. Perhaps there were 2 of them........?

Also vaguely recall that Tony Schwerdt (brother of Mr 10%) was ferrying a Pitts to Australia in early '86 (or thereabouts) when it suffered a long silence and ended up in the trees. Could this be the same one/

P2 Pitts

Yes, two of them, P2-ROB was Rob Wood, 1982 to 1991, to VH-LRQ. P2-ART, I have a name listed as Graham Weir (unsure of correct spelling)

Spelling is correct and he owned ART.

He was a Qantas cadet who got told to go occupy himself for a year or 2 when QF had a surplus of cadets. He joined ATC and was in Hagen with me in the mid 70's. ART crashed whilst being ferried south.

Last I heard he was check and training with QF.
He also teamed up with Tony Karras and flew choppers in PNG for a while.... and pranged (ground looped) P2-BOX in Hagen.

I'm with Tinny on this. The place is certainly MUCH different to the way it was at Independence, though certainly not for the better, more's the pity.

Abandoned aircraft in PNG

There must be a fair few 'abandoned/wrecked' P2 registered aircraft lying around in PNG. Care to report on any?

What about the trislander airframes that sat outside the dero 10 years ago?
What about the PA31 that southwest air had as an air ambo?
I remember seeing P2-COI departing nadzab on her last flight and commenting that it looked like a heavy piece of shut (kiwi accent).what happened to Mac Lee's 185, 206 and PA31. What about RH's 206 and PA31?

That should be Airwest. (Fred Martens) - South West Air has never owned or operated a PA31.

PA-31 AMBO and others

I have P2-AWF listed as ambo, to VH-AFW in 2004. Other PA-31's on P2, -
NGM, cr Porgera/Karik, BDL to VH-BDN, CXL to VH-RCV, NTT to VH-ODJ, RHA to VH-NMK, SAS to VH-MYX, TED to VH-STO. All accounted for, so obviously I am 'missing' the one in question ? Any further info ?
Troppo - P2-COI, last flight - to where ? (Cessna 402B). If you can quote some registrations, I may be able to advise their fate to answer your questions. TRISLANDERS, DNP went back to VH-BSP, DNX went to VH-MRJ, DNN was withdrawn from use 20.07.1995, think last operator was MapMakers ?

Dive Wreck At Rabaul

There is a Piper Aztec as a dive wreck in 12m of water off Matalau Beach, Rabaul. Anyone know the i/d of this Aztec ? (P2-AVR had an accident there and P2-TGP was also based there, I think ?)

P2-AVR (ex AVIS rent-a-plane) crashed 32 nm wsw of Rabaul on the western side of the Bainings range, blew the stb inboard fuel tank at 8,500 feet and went vertically into a ravine, causing a landslide which covered the wreckage - the pilot was Jim Lockyer. He'd made his 30 mile on descent call to Rabaul FS, probably crossing the coast. They found the site with a brief squeak of the VSB signal - May 1975.

It was one of those rare clear still days in PNG when you could 'see forever'. I was inbound from Witu to Hoskins late afternoon, could see the thin column of smoke but never realised, didn't believe the connection.

It was the first fatality for Crowley Airways, apart from the 'Ronald Biggs' aztec which disappeared out of Lae. The aztecs used by Crowley's were AVB, UNK, PAY, CSA. Perhaps others. Crowleys became PANGA Airways shortly after that and part of TALAIR a year later.

When I was based in Rabaul, an electrician named Mike Waller had an Aztec, and I have a feeling it might have been TGP. It never flew in the 2 years I was there, and looked like an ideal candidate to become a submarine.
