Saidor?
And to make the post long enough - The ground just this side of the strip looks like its been bombed - Saidor was a wartime strip.
If not Saidor I'd say Sialum.
I think the last time I landed at either was late 1988.

Chuck, somehow I had the feeling I could rely on you with this picture . Sialum is right. So you must have landed there the same year the picture was taken. Pity we never met, but I was only there for a couple of weeks. If you ever come to the densely inhabited part of Europe, Iīll buy you the drinks.

Sialum 1973
.......Puts me in mind of the time there was a resort? at Sialum where I spent a liesurely weekend, used to have a small pier - picked up a 40mm shell from the water - seem to remember the strip was coral.
.....and that reminds me of an overloaded C185 (SP and unrestrained pax) which impacted and burnt near Sialum en route Lae - Kabwum, got mixed up with apinun thunderies, hit trees at six thousand feet losing a wing and spun down nearly to sea level. It was the 185 that Richard Leahy successfully ditched into Lake Wisdom on a photography trip, recovered and rebuilt before selling to the pilot who crashed near Sialum.

Resort Sialum
Shinbone, could it have been this place? It was a couple of miles south of Sialum. When I passed there in 1988 it looked a bit run down, but they were obviously still charging prices as if it was a 5***** Hilton.

There's a nice story about Eileens' flying career in the Sunshine Coast Weekender 1st July,2010.
If you look it up online - weekender - what goes on goes in - go to 'archives' and click on the 30th June thumb pic.
Great to see she's bright and well at the very good score of 94.
happy days,

I'm amazed at the lack of plastic bags in the above picture. I bet it doesnt look like that now.
Off to Lae tomorrow to look at a whole different kind of plastic bag.
I wonder if the Buai is spat in different patterns or colors up there.

Lae and Bomana War Cemetries are maintained by the Australian Government on behalf of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They should be just as well maintained as they ever were.
Lae Botanical Gardens and the orchid collection will probably be a different matter.

The Morobe Province, body charters 'n stuff
I recall on one occasion joining overhead Sialum (from Siwea) with a load of the normal crap on board, (kopi, tinpis etc) and noticed a larger than normal group of local folk gathered in the parking area. When I got out the wailing was deafening. I began to untie the net to offload whatever when one of the locals came over to check the contents of my balus. He called out to the mob in ples tok and the wailing immediately stopped. They were expecting the return of deceased loved one. Another aircraft joined overhead and the mandatory wailing began on cue.
The owner of the resort at Sialum (also owner of the only video shop in Lae) and was an "interesting character" to say the least. Not surprised to hear he was charging Hilton prices, I always thought he was the type who'd sell his grandmother to a brothel and charge virgin prices.

I went to the Dawn Service at Bomana this year, and the grounds were a magnificent tribute to those who rest there. As the Lae grounds are looked after by the same crowd, I hope and expect they are in the same condition.
The Pom Bot gardens are still in pretty good nick. can't speak for the Lae ones though.

Bobby built the Bird of Paradise Hotel in Goroka and other hotels in PNG.
The Bird as she is today, you can buy baskets and other local stuff out front, Electronic Banking Lobby that works, and a Bintangor supermarket over the road, I think there's a Chinese restaurant next to it.
God! Hasn't Goroka changed in the 25 years since I was last there?????
What is that large building behind the old Talair office (in the center of the photo) - Cunning & Lousy's expanded supermarket?
