Part of an email message from Subic Bay.....
Gentlemen,
Since I have written to you once before, in July, about Peter’s alleged trip to London, I have your email addresses, so I thought I should use them to pass on the very sad news that our good friend Peter died yesterday morning at 5 am in Subic Bay. He had been in and out of hospital with some minor complaints and a few tests, but sounded well on Saturday and was planning to come down to the Yacht Club on Sunday. However he didn’t make it.
I can’t tell you much more at the moment, but when I have more details I will pass them on. It seems that he may be moved to Manila on Tuesday.
I apologise if you already know, but thought it decent to write in case you had not been told.
He was a good mate and the very core of our sailing racing here in Subic Bay. He got four of us on the water about 5 years ago and we became the “Subic SAGS” (Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen’s Sailing). Currently races in Subic are now attended by many boats from Manila and we regularly have a dozen boats on the water. Not sure how we are going to do it without him, because he put so much time and competence into it! He will be sorely missed for any number of reasons.
I’ll keep in touch in the next day or so.

Damn shame!
Sharpie was a relentless fighter for the conditions and pays structure of all Air Niugini Pilots!
He was highly respected by the entire pilot group for his skills flying in PNG and preparedness to help out fellow Pilots.
A shame he never got to live a long and full life in his country of retirement.

I'm Pauline Peter Sharpe's daughter and sadly can confirm Dad passed away on the 13.9.9 - will be missed by us all - an incredible person, one of those special people you rarely have the opportunity to meet

PPRuNe Moderators know many of our registered members, although the members may not know us as Moderators. Some Moderators of this forum knew Peter, in my case for the past forty years. I also visited him at his retirement home in Subic a few years ago.
User profiles can only be seen by Moderators and in Sharpies case, I would like to post his PPRuNe profile details for the benefit of those who only knew him from his PPRuNe posts.
Sharpie registered as a PPRuNe User on 1 June 2001 and over the past eight years, made 442 posts. His last post was #2189 in this thread, on 23rd August 2009, 21:07, although his last visit 11th September 2009, 14:10.
His Licence type is ATPL, current type F28, interests "Yachting. PNG Aviation History" and occupation "Retired air pilot".
Those that knew him thought he'd been around forever, however his biography line states: "Born year of the Rat 1936 and live up to it!"

His location is given as: "Club Morocco. Subic Bay. Philippines". I know his home, on the hill overlooking his beloved yacht club, where I was fortunate to share more than a few San Migs with him.
I like to think Sharpie has arrived and is now enjoying a few coldies with many of his past friends and colleagues, Larry Blackman, Bryan Grey, Vince Sanders and so many others - or knowing Sharpie, again "The Angry Ant" aguing the merits of the PNG pilots strike with Junior and Bikkies!
His passing is a loss to all who knew him and to our PPRuNe community.

Thank you for the heads up on the site protocol. I just wanted to make you all aware that Dad had passed away as I am sure he influenced many lives to the extent he did mine.
I must say, I find it enriching to communicate with those who knew Dad as he was my Mentor and I am very sure I would not have achieved the special things I have in my life so far = competing at the World Duathlon Championships for NZ, becoming one of the top dressage riders in NZ, becoming a Finance Director of one of the largest advertising companies in Australasia - none of this would have been achievable without the guidance of "Sharpie". He taught me to never give up, when someone said it couldn't be done, meant it could ... I could keep going with underlining his qualitites. I know he will be missed by many. I know for sure when you die there is only one thing you take with you - the love. Dad love you heaps and will think of you every day

Your Dad had a great sense of humour and I know he would appreciate my comment that if you have achieved:
You are blessed with your Mum's genes! The thought of Sharpie astride a horse defies even the greatest imagination.
But indeed, it appears you inherited your Dad's fight and determination!

I worked with Sharpie for 13 years and his memory will always bring a smile.
A big champion for what he thought was right and a dogged determination that would frustrate all.
Passionate about all things Flying, PNG, Sailing and his Mates. He had a love hate (big love small hate) relationship with ANG which we were all entitled too but worked tirelessly for ANG's welfare and prosperity.
If he thought something wasn't right he spoke up BIG time, if no one would listen he would put his own time and money on the line to right the wrong.
He would not stand back and listen when PNG was criticised particularly by those who knew little of the country.
PNG and ANG have lost one of the truly few characters that made working there such a wonderful experience.
Quite a few beers should be raised for having had the opportunity to know and work with Sharpie.
I will make sure it's an SP for having known the red faced little bull terrier.

The Grim Reaper must surely have snuck up on him without warning.
As a young ATC in PNG Peter was never slow in "chipping" me for any perceived error in my procedures and he was usually right
Many an enjoyable hour was spent at the Derro and the Yachtie discussing the error of my ways and how I should have done it.
You will be sorely missed Pete!
May your God provide you with an endless supply of "coldies" and a stiff breeze.

When modelling this, the kits decals disintegrated and following several disasters that marred what was a nice paint finish I had a gutful and used some left over decals from my PNG Dakota project. For a modelling forum I wrote this little covering "story"
Meet the PNGDF Mig 15 "Tinpis" Following skirmishes between Indonesian West Irian forces and the West Papua Liberation Army and border incursions into its territory, the PNG government sought to demonstrate its ability to defend its borders. As no assistance was expected to be fothcoming from Australia, the then Minister for Aviation Mr Pious (WingtiP) Wingti acquired some slightly used Migs from North Korea. (Evidence of this former ownership can be found with the barely visible remnants of nationality marking under the wings). The acquistion was carried out in secrecy under the code name "Operation Tinpis" because the airframes were to be shipped in crates marked "Tinned Mackeral" as deck cargo on Lutheran Shipping lines tramp steamers.
Anyway after a series of mishaps, just the one example was assembled, prepared and test flown at Nadzab.
The aircraft was woefully unsuited to the task being short ranged and also due to the lack of suitable airfields so it spent most of its time unoperational on the operational readiness platforms alongside the runway.
The type was to be named the "Muruk" after the native name for a Cassowary, an aggressive but unfortunately flightless bird. This was considered inappropriate for obvious reasons and the name "Kumul" after the bird of paradise was floated but after the PNG governments Beech Super Kingair "Kumul 2" dead sticked in Moresby following fuel exhaustion (true story) there-by founding the Moresby "Gliding Club" this too was rejected. Finally the moniker "Tinpis" was used quite appropriately because the whole fiasco stunk to high heaven.
Anyway a pretty little jet completely and utterly stuffed up..it joins the "awaiting resurrection" pile if I can ever be bothered.
Note that one of the brighter airframe fitters / surface finishers had read about coke bottle area rule transonic drag reduction. This technician being also aware of the speed enhancing properties of GT stripes modified a straight Dakota cheat line into a curved stripe in an effort to improve the tinpis's performance. Its effectiveness was not recorded
