That Queenair was operated in PNG by 'The Frog', Trans Niugini Airways, until it became obvious it was a bad decision and he abandoned it at Mt Hagen.

They shoulda just left the Swamp Ghost where it was

Upon this subject Chuck, I must, with all due respect, beg to differ!
I see no point in leaving an airframe such as a B17 rot in the kunai when it could possibly be fully restored to a flying condition.
And that goes for a few P38s that I crawled over/around and into during my time in PNG. I knew of four or five airframes in various states of ruin about the country. Not to mention a P47 sitting on its nose down Milne Bay way, though I vaguely remember hearing that it has gone.

I would agree...but that aint gonna be what happens...its gonna rot in Lae. It lay in the swamp between Girua and Wanigela for 60 years and was still in fantastic condition...it'll be fecked in 2 years where it is now.

If someone with a half a brain and good intentions wrestles it off the PNG Govt I will jump for joy...but I suspect the more likely scenario is that the people who pulled it out of the swamp will be worn down by experts and, in the end, just walk away.

I have just accidently found a PNG website, that is BRILLIANT, in my opinion.
I have never seen it mentioned here before, since I asked Woomera to please start this thread, as I didn't know, then, how to do it.

Ahhh...the HLS. The Highland Slave Labour Service.

Boy was some money made press ganging the bois and flyin em in then shacklin them into the side saddle DC3s after a short stay in the "compound"
Repatriating them to their villages with their hair combs suitcases full of al kinds of ****e...including once a dead mate who had been hacked up to fit in a cheap suitcase because it was too expensive cargo rates
The bag snatcher got suspicious when claret started leaking out of the case.

PNG Website

Apinun all,

Earlier on this page I mentioned the PNG website I found, www.pngbd.com ,
have any of you all had a look at? If so, what do you think.

There also great photos to be found, especially shots of my old base, Rabaul, before, during and after the horrendous eruption.

Cheers,

robroy

After having read all 673 pages of reminiscent waffle about your "good old days in PNG", I have decided you are all remarkably soft.

Now when I was up there, the colonial policies of the time included extension of slavery to anyone who didn't have a knighthood and shooting anyone without a twirled moustache and gin and tonic in hand.

WWII wrecks were yet to grace the landscape and when they did, they were dime a dozen. Several japs, who refused to believe the war was over, menaced villagers in the hills north of Milne Bay.

Sliced bread was not yet invented, but they were pretty close to a major breakthrough.

Also,
pilai wantaim meri

was not as dangerous back then as "western medical complications"
were yet to afflict the meris.

Lucky though that some smart chappy had invented the bokis ice and we were able to keep our bia cold.

Of course SP was yet to grace the scene, i think it came in around '52...

Lads,

Totally enjoyed the reading, is this around the era of Terry Blythe or would that be prior to the general talk.

I believe he flew DC-3's and Catalinas.

Terry Blythe

After PNG, didn't Terry fly for Air Express or Ipec out of Essendon on Bristol Frighteners. I can remember having drinks with him and Jack (Zeke)McDonald on numerous occassions at the Cockpit Bar at the Essendon terminal
Cheers
