Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

When MBA first started a scheduled service POM-Merauke via Daru with a B1900 there was many a time we had to wait for the customs man to clear the aircraft - outbound and inbound. He has been - in bed drunk; in the pub (Daru Hilton!); in the lockup; and anywhere else you'd care to mention. Have to say that new building looks good. Is it? Will it stay that way? Does it have toilets? I have to stop being cynical!!

I remember arriving POM from Honiara with PX - no customs (it was a holiday weekend) - as employee of PX at the time I was asked "What now?" Made all the usual telephone calls and couldn't find anyone so I advised pax that I couldn't stop them walking out of the (old) customs hall... so they walked!

Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

The previous terminal was burnt down straight after it was built. Any bets on how long this one will last?

almost as nice as the main street and markets.

" Loopy " Len Cleaver...there's a blast from the past .
Didn't he do a ' wheels up ' in a C402 many years ago somewhere in the Western Province , Lake Murray/Kiunga/Nomad River or somewhere ?.

Wheels up in a 402 would be about the only way to get it to stop in Nomad River

Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

I recall a story about Len reporting that he departed Nomad in near o/o weather for Kiunga in his Stol 185. Climbed up a few thousand, read his Phantom comic along the way, let down where he thought Kiunga should be until the clouds turned green, carried out his missed approach procedure and returned to Nomad. Let down again until the clouds turned green, slowed down with a few notches of flap, broke out around 2-300 feet, Nomad straight ahead, full flap and landed.

Even Hellydore Von tschushnick would shake his head in wonder when a Baron with Loopy in it would appear out of the glue into the Hagen circuit.

Spelling Tinpis!!!

It was Captain Helidore Otmar Baron Von Tschuchnigg. Or "Who vill pay for ziss" to his colleagues!!

Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

A great story about Len was that he once lost the Administrator + wife from a charter in a STOL 310 - somewhere about mid 60's I think. Rumour has it that his hot start procedure was so graphic that the VIP pax decided to abandon ship, with the Administrator declaring you lot are bloody dangerous and I'll be taking this up with management, rant ,rant......Needless to say - nothing happened.

I also remember another Len story regards one of STOL's Aztecs - COB I think, which was rumoured to have a very 'tricky' crossfeed. Len reportedly had been doing a bit of crossfeed practice, and inadvertantly shutdown one donk somewhere over the hills - flew the remaining hour back to POM on one. Pax were very impressed apparently.

Pilots were in short supply there in the 60's, and Loopy continued on undaunted. He was a bit unconventional, but a bloody effective PNG operator. Can still picture him.

happy days

Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

G'day Sharpie, I haven't seen Loopy in ages. That's not to say that he isn't still around - after all, where else would he be happy eh? Not even sure of the status of the PM Department's balus these days but, being as how I haven't had an excuse to burgle the hangar in the last couple of years, any information I have would be quite dated. I've heard a rumour (oh noooo, not one of THOSE! ), that there might be a new Kumul 1 in the offing sometime this year, so there's a good chance that the Unit still exists. And, if so, there's every chance that Loopy's still be there too.

Oi Wiz, howz that really young bird doing these days? I'm sure that she's counting the hours until you return!

On past performance, I'm sure that the firebugs will wait until the new Daru terminal is completed before they run the same fire-resistance test!

Thumbs up Re: PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok

Yeah Tinnie, Bernie is still here. Saw him early December while escorting Wiz around the airport. He (Bernie, that is) had somehow managed to lock himself in the GFU admin office.

To all that requested the Mike Thomas cd copies, they were all posted on thursday evening (except two, and you two have PMs) so you should watch your mail box.
