Bird Strike
When the ADF would do their PNG familiarisation flights they would sometimes manage an overnight at the Bensbach Lodge.
Whilst I was fishing downstream from the lodge one day a Caribou flew low overhead heading down the Bensbach River at the same time as a flock of pelicans, a few hundred metres further downstream, took off into the Caribou's flightpath. See the result of that little incident below.
Next day another Caribou flew up from Townsville and patched up the first Caribou and they both flew back to Oz.
I heard later that the damaged aircraft was retired from service, but that sounds a little hard to believe. There's a bit more to the story but "no names no pack drill." All this happened about thirty years ago.

ADF Famils
Had a Caribou visit Bulolo in the early '80s. As it taxied in and opened the cowls, something fell out.
Turned out to be a stud from the cylinder head. This needed an engine change on the grass strip at Bulolo. The new one was flown in from Richmond using a Hercules. Then, using a tong loader from the plymill as a hoist, off came the old engine and in went the new one.
No mean engineering feat in the bush!
Nice windfall for Pine Lodge too, as a one night stay turned into 4 nights!
Cheers

tinpis building behind BN2 looks like the AT hangar.Met Brian OSullivan first when he and Mike Roddis were operating a pair of B206 for Airfast .in 1974. The job was a seismic survey for Didgecon. I was out in the bush with a Broom Broom for a week moving the boi line as required .Those survey blokes were strange bastards (..you had to initial you own beer and woe betide anyone grabbing a greenie with someone elses initials.) after a week of that I moved into kiap Scungie Randolfs place in Morehead,. Brian was an accomplished flemenco giutarist and a tape made in the AT pilots house in Daru was copied by many and my copy still exhists somewhere. I well remember the incumbent manager of the Daru Hilton He is one of only two people who have robbed me and got away with it, I hope all his lamb chops turn into pork. The pub got so ratty that Macair pilots used to stay in the AT pilots .house and I got paid for my trouble. Noran Martin was one.Loopy and I used to swap warrants .ie if I got a warrant to take 5 pax to F---ing Kiunga and Loopy got a warrant for a ton of freight drums etc to F---ing Kiunga ..we d swap it .seemed to work ,the admin were happy and no one grizzled so it must have been ok. .Nothing if not, practical ,us chaps.

What you've all forgotten is that you always turned the Islander pitot heat on before landing regardless. As the locals ignored the instructions to stay away from he aircraft, they'd grab hold of the pitot tube as it was a suitable hand-hold and run off into the jungle screaming with a burnt hand. (◔◡◔)

tinpis... that was still going on in the 1980s - feeding the refugees from Irian Jaya. Some of the refugees spoke only a Dutch dialest and were assisted by the Dutch mission at Ningerum.

The Phantom
Does anyone remember Barry Walker "The Phantom". He had the Mt. Hagen Hotel at the tine and I had the Airport Hotel. Barry then went to Kieta Hotel. I believe he has passed away now. But I will remember "The Phantom all the days of my life. After the Airport Hotet (Now the Plumes and Arrows) and a stint in Australia I went to the Palm Lodge Hotel in Kimbe in West new Brittian.
Fun times were had by all.

Cec was renowned for the scars on his head from his many tumbles... but he was never late for a 0400 start at work. Mind you he scared the airport staff when he was carrying food back to the catering shop and swerved to miss a turning 185 propellor. His mate Peter Black opened a restaurant at the Lae RSL and was last seen living on the Gold Coast about 10 years ago.
There's a couple of stories about Barry Walker on this thread!!

Kiunga-Ningerum shuttle
Yeah, I was based at Kiunga March-April 1971 on the Kiunga-Ningerum shuttle. Stayed at the "haus pig". Did enjoy it as it was my first twin experience.
We also managed a few trips to Olsobip, Telefomin, Nomad River and once a week to Wapenamunda for fresh vegetables for the base.
Fortunately a base opportunity came up for Daru, where there was married accommodation so was able to bring my wife of nine months up to PNG.

The Phantom
I sure remember the Phantom, used to stay with him on many an occasion in Kaviang when he ran the hotel there for awhile.Top bloke and always loved a yarn and a coldie-almost anytime !.I used to park the machine on the lawn right beside the room he always had "reserved" for us.
A true gentleman and one I'll not forget.
