Bensbach P38

During the war three P38's en route Port Moresby-Merauke ran out of fuel in the Bensbach/Arufi area. The story is that they left Townsville, loaded up with fuel,at the expense of ammunition, for Port Moresby. They arrived at Moresby during a Japanese air raid. Low on fuel and with no ammunition they made a run for Merauke which was in allied hands. Three of them ran out of fuel and ditched, one near Arufi, one on the coast somewhere south of Arufi, and the one shown below about 5-10 miles SE of Bensbach. All the pilots were rescued. The photos below were taken over thirty years ago. At the end of the dry season you can drive to the wreck. I don't know what condition it would be in now as it goes underwater every wet season.

The two Dim Dims are Peter Leite,NHC surveyor, and Doug Barsby,(deceased),2IC National Mapping Bureau.

AirLink ATR 42

AirLink's ATR 42 at Madang. They had icing problems, but they would have been fixed by the time AirLink got theirs. Google "American Eagle flight 4184" for more details.

May..?? Give it a break....like 20 years.. they were modified ages ago!

You will always get ice buildup in the Tropics when you go through a big wet Cu above about 15,000 or 16,000. The ATR is certified to 25,000. Would be surprised to see an ATR landing at any airport in PNG still carrying substantial ice after an encounter at altitude.

You forgot to explain that "d" in front of the name means deceased.

There are for instance a few MACAIR Neddy's there that never flew for TAL?
If you have been omitted please add to the list where appropriate

Strike! so many names I have known and didn't realize they'd been in the TAL numbers.
Very impressive.
How many have d in front of their names who did it up there. Not as many as since, when they grew much older?

Cresswell, Dick: Not sure Dick flew for TAL. He ferried the last DH85 VH-AON to Australia in August 1958.

Chadim, A.V (Tony): Tony left TAL in the late 1950s. Last I spoke to him was thirty years ago and he was still all bent and twisted at Junior. He was working for the government in Canberra. I'm sure he would be gone by now.

Harris, Ray: Ray left TAL in the mid 1950's and joined DCA. I'm sure he passed away some years ago.

Matus, Mat: Mat was living in Cairns. (Mat and Tony Chadim carried out the first recorded aircraft hijack when they flew out of Czechoslovakia at the end of World War II.)

Nisbet, Adrian; Found this about GHOC:
NISBET, Adrian
Born Sydney 1923, died peacefully January 30, 2011.
Preceded in death by his wife Beverley, survived by Guy, Alex, Katharine and
their partners and children and by his four daughters from previous marriages.

Peacock, Noel: Pranged a Dragon at Chimbu mid 1950s and was seriously injured.

Sherwood, Bill: G'Day Bill. Long time since we spoke. Good to see you posting on PPRuNe! I think you would be the sole surviving pilot from the early TAL days?

Ironsides, John: Last heard of managing a caravan park in the UK???

McCook, Bryan: Passed away last August in Tasmania.

Sharpe, Peter J.R: Passed away.

Steenson, Eileen: I would be surprised if Eileen were still alive.

Bloxham, Scott This person was known as Scott Bloxham - was his surname Scott-Bloxham? William Scott-Bloxam.

Gibbes, Bobby: Passed away four years ago.

Henry, Graham; Did I hear something very recently about Graham?

Hoff, Heinrich: Passed away.

Holder, Ian Ian used to work for Talair Cairns. Did he work for Talair PNG?: No, Ian worked for PX in PNG. Employed as a pilot by Talair Australia and Flight West based Cairns.

Buchanan, Ron: Passed away.

Dangar, Dodi: Dodi was an accountant, not a pilot.

I agree that there are quite a few Maciar pilots that didn't fly for Talair on the list.

However Matthew Dwyer is missing from the list. He died on 21/6/10.

Yes, I thought of Bill Johns, the "Tasmanian Timpanist". Bill Johns was with TAL in the pre Junior, Jack Gray and Jim Smith era, so I think preceded Bill Sherwood?

However the last I heard of Billy Johns was at least a year ago and I believe he was not well then. I must check with Jasper.

Last I heard of him, he was having an extended vacation in West Irian.

Ah, Pussy Galore. I didn't see her on the list. Her husband also flew for Talair I think?

I saw Biggles (Don Sinclair) in the list somewhere.
