Just trying to figure out what I want to do in the future and have a couple of questions about job stability of being a pilot. I understand it is hard to have stability in this profession. Having all the information would make a better decision, thanks.

What happens if you can't pass your medical after a few years with an airline? Is there medical pension? they lay you off with some sort of insurance or severance?

What happens if you don't pass your annual simulator check? Do they just keep giving you chances until you pass it or do they lay you off after a set number of attempts?

What happens when you cant pass your AC upgrade? Do they just keep giving you 2nd chances? Are you allowed to stay FO forever with the company or do they lay you off at some point.

If you lose your medical, hopefully you have some sort of disability insurance or loss of medical insurance. Many smaller companies do not have this but bigger companies do.

My last employer and current employer would often find jobs in the training department for pilots that lose their medicals, and they can teach in the simulator or ground school, or do office work such as develop manuals or training materials.

If you fail your annual check, you usually get additional training and a recheck, but if you continue to have problems then you get fired usually.

Most companies allow a pilot to stay an FO forever but some have forced upgrades. Some companies have an up or out policy, where you get fired if you fail upgrade, so I guess the answer is it depends on the company.

If you are half-way healthy you should be able to pass a class one medical. Regarding the check rides, most of us don't like them, but a little stress is a good thing and should motivate you to study. I'd be more concerned about the financial health of the airlie and of the economy as a whole.
