ATP-CTP and ATPL Practical Test concerns.

I´m looking forward to get my FAA ATPL but have a few doubts and concerns about the process and I hope you can help me. If I am wrong at something please let me know.

First, my background:
FAA Commercial Multi-engine without A320 Type Rating.
Foreign ICAO Commercial Multi-engine with A320 Type Rating. Currently flying at an airline overseas as 320 F/O.
1500+ TT and complying with the aeronautical experience according to 61.159.

This is what I understand:
I need to take the ATP-CTP Course to be able to take the Knowledge Test. ATP-CTP does not include any kind of Practical Test, it only allows you to take the Written Test. Is that right?

After that I need to get the Practical Test done (Oral + actual flight in PA-44 or so, or a simulator session concurrently with a type rating)

I´ve been offered a Foreign A320 Upgrade/Conversion Course as a path to get the FAA ATPL concurrently with the A320 type rating. In that case, am I going to get the "Based on a foreign license" statement in the back of my pilot license? I want to avoid that. And I´ve seen that statement in a few FAA pilot licenses that made some kind of conversion from a foreign license, but without going through practical tests, only written tests and FSDO paper work and I believe you can only do that for PPL :confused:(See 61.75)

In order to be eligible for airlines overseas as Middle East and Asia, do you guys know if they require you to have a Type Rating in the ATPL? What if I hold a commercial license with type rating from one country and sufficient flight time in such type rated a/c, and in addition holding a ATPL without type rating from another country? Im trying to decide if going for a normal checkride or a simulator checkride concurrently with the type rating. There is a substantial difference in $$$$ between them.

I would appreciate if you can guide me a little here.

The ONLY certificate the FAA will issue based on a foreign license is a VFR only private. If the training doing the foreign upgrade class is a FAA approved 142 training center and if the foreign training course fills all the squares of the TC's FAA approved then they can issue a FAA ATP with the type rating. Otherwise it is Sorry for shouting, the FAA guidance is in all caps.

I am in the process of doing the ATP and what you have written is also my understanding of the process the CTP course is very straight forward and most people recommend the Shepard Air software for exam prep.

I am however having trouble finding a school that is able to do the check ride in a light twin. The likes of All ATP no longer offer a program to do the ATP Check ride unless it involves a Type rating.

If anybody could suggest a school in the LA, SFO, Newark or Chicago area that can do pre check ride preparation and check ride I would be grateful for some contacts.

Try the school that is run through sporty's pilot shop. They advertise doing the ATP-MEL flight test in a Duchess or some other light twin.

I've just done the ATP-CTP through CAE in Dallas, sat the written the following day and now I'm doing my indoc/training at a regional for the type ride/ATP.

As previously mentioned, the ATP-CTP does NOT prep you for the ATP written at all. Fortunately I knew this in advance and used the Dauntless prep software a couple of weeks in advance (same as Sheppard Air).

The ATP-CTP is a no fail course. A bunch of people thought it was a waste of time, but I definitely did get a lot out of it especially because at CAE they keep you in the same sim type for all sorties for continuity.

**Note; make sure you get your TSA stuff completed way in advance, as the TSA is really backlogged getting the approvals through with so many people requiring the ATP-CTP course in addition to their normal workload of applications.

Not near those places but I know a school in Wichita that will do your prep and checkride in an Apache. They specialise in overseas students and military-civil conversion. They provide food and lodging, pick you up from the airport, lend you a car to get around, and the owner does all the FAA paperwork for you (it is in his interest to make sure it is done right). All you have to do is eat, sleep and fly. The written can also be done there - test center at the airport.

If someone holds an ICAO ATPL, can the ATP-CTP course be bypassed?

No. no bypassing the ATP-CTP.

To be clear, you can take the ATP single engine test without the ATP-CTP course, but you would not be able to get an ATP for multiengine airplane.

I assume that it's an exact same test right? Will it say on test certificate that is only for single engine aircraft?

No. In the US everything is class-specific. ATP single and ATP multi are two different tests.

You take either the ATM knowledge test or the ATS knowledge test or the ATH knowledge test.The test results will say which test you took. There are even different single, ME and helicopter tests for our Canuck cousins if they are applying for an ATP under the FAA-Transport Canada agreement.

I don't know which test an ATP Powered Lift candidate would take.
