the picture in the article makes me wonder why the gear was not down, or at least does not appear down.

there is an ILS apch to 20, which the aRticle indicates was the runway/apch clearance given.

Really hard to say about the gear. The damage to the nose and the fuselage just forward of the vertical fin makes it look like it hit nose down and came to rest on its belly. Could have broken the gear mounts or just driven the gear into the plowed field. Not a great night for flying.

it is very hard to tell. i can't see the props well enough to determine if they were producing power, can you?

The plane is not upside down, which makes me think that both engines were running. IF you go below VMCA in a Twin , with one engine out and the other at full power, the plane usually goes in upside down.

I have to think fatigue was part of the equation. Better to have spent the night and come back at first light!
