I understand the current united airlines non-rev policy requires you to name up to 2 pass riders annually (IE: There's no more "buddy passes").

Is a a United airlines captain (>30 years of service) who retired in the 1990s able to bring a companion (friend) on board a domestic flight with them as long as they are on the same flight?

Yes you can. They don't have to travel with you. You just have to have to have them listed as enrolled friends. A better place to ask is a yahoo group called Retup.

Thank you. In this particular case, it would not be frequent enough to justify listing me vs the other folks on there who will actually use it.

So listing is not an option.

However is it like some other airlines (like Alaska) where there is a "companion" class that allows the person to travel with the employee/retiree as long as they are on the same flight, without listing them?

No, they are not like buddy passes. They are called enrolled companions or something like that. I have not done it and so am not an expert, but you go on line to enroll up to 2 people for the year. There is an enrollment period at the end of the year, but if you have never enrolled any one you can do it any time.
