San Francisco Radio correct Initial call contact.
 
Hey all,

While on HF contacting San Francisco for the first time coming from Asia over the Pacific.

"San Francisco Radio, San Francisco Radio, EVA123, CPDLC, FL330, registration ABC, departed Taipei, destination Los Angeles, request SELCAL on BCDE"

What is the correct format of this call?
Where is the reference for this correct format?

Why not giving the Radio Operator the possibility to write down your call sign first: " San Francisco Radio, San Francisco Radio, EVA 123!"?

Apologies, the call after initial contact.

All necessary information.

CPDLC will be your primary ATC comm, so you are confirming that you have established the datalink. Backup is HF radio, hence the SELCAL check.

ADIZ procedures require the identification of your aircraft: type, registration, origin, destination. If you forget something, they will ask.

Hi All,
As far as a know checking in if connected ads / cpdlc in FAA land is : san francisco radio EVA123 ads and cpdlc connected ,exit point-----, ---- next(next center), selcal code -------.
Ex: new york radio eva 123 ads and cpdlc connected exit point okonu new york next selcal abcd.

SFO ARINC CPDLC Checkin
 
Pacific Chart Supplement (the blue book from the FAA that supplements your IFR charts) Page 61 (CPDLC) entering the KZAK FIR are required to contact SFO ARINC and provide Selcal, Departure, Destination, A/C registration and advise whether Satvoice equipped (but the later is never done).

If you are HF reporting and NOT CPDLC, then you can omit the Aircraft Registration. This is because when you are CPCLC and KZAK cannot get hold of you or gets no response to direct messages, the controller will send them to the Radio Operator to deliver via HF. If you haven't been in touch with ARINC for a number of hours and haven't switched or been advised of the current HF frequencies the RO can look you up by either registration or Selcal code only.

Remember that the RO on first contact on a long-transpacific flight can only hazzard a guess at what the HF frequencies will be assigned by a different colleague/position in 3-4 hours time based on propagation so what may be assigned, could change before you get into that region. Its not an exact science.

As some Registrations change at short notice, and some Selcal codes are used by multiple aircraft (albeit in different geographical regions normally), the RO can call you straight off the panel and find you to deliver the ATC message or clearance.

Further to my last...
 
And remember.. your aircraft transmitter is weaker than SFO Radio equipment so the RO hears you weaker than you think they do in some cases. Also, the RO is typing a format specific message into the Air Ground System which is then displayed to the Air Traffic Controller on the Ocean 21 ATC system (a sophisticated mock radar system) from which they control flight movements.

Please feel free to visit SFO ARINC (located in Livermore CA) anytime you have a layover in SFO, or NYC ARINC (located opposite Islip Long Island Airport) anytime you are in NY for a tour of either radio room. Plugging and seeing what the RO's hear and type will give you a better understanding of how it all works.
