Flight Schools Near Route 66

Next month I'll be driving along Route 66 from Chicago to the west coast. I'm a retired airline captain and will be travelling with another ex capt.. We both have current EU PPLs and US licenses.

Somewhere along the route we would like to rent an aircraft - just for fun. Perhaps a Piper 28 or a C172.

There are many flight schools along the route so we're looking for special recommendations. Any advice? Thanks..

EF,

If you don't get responses here, try these guys. 99.9% US-centric and a generally civilized mob. They might have some suggestions (I'm not affiliated with them):

You might try the airport at Kingman, AZ. Interesting old WW-2 vintage training filed. after the war there were thousands of fighters and bombers stored here. Even today there are lots of old airliners awaiting their final demise. There is an old and very "rustic" museum that covers the history of this once busy place. The airport is close in to the town.

Not to far from the Grand Canyon, and lots of Route 66 memorabilia around the town.

Great mexican food at El Palacio, with awesome Margaritas. Sounds like a neat trip!

Eat at Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket ? World Famous Fried Chicken which aside being a great eat was a hang out for Hinsdale Airport before it closed. The helicopter guys stayed after the closure so on occasion you them coming in and out from the little piece of tarmac left.

Enjoy the adventure.
