Flying to Florida

Hello,

Me and my family will be taking our first holiday outside the UK and we decided to go to Florida for my niece.

However, the problem is i'm not exactly a 'small person' as i'm fat. We will be flying with BA and AC (British Airways & Air Canada). I've been looking for information on these 2 airlines in regards to fat people but there's no information.

The seats on AC range from 17.38 inches to 18.65 inches. But not sure on the sizes of BA. I've heard that I would likely have to ask for a seat belt extension. I have roughly a 60 inch waist (about 27 - 28 stone. I know... I am trying to lose weight but it's hard.). I can fit on/in National Express (Stagecoach) coaches and the seat belt does go round me, just. I'm not sure how big National Express seats are but the coaches are made so they can fit as many people on as possible so I wouldn't think they would be any bigger than seats on planes. Probably smaller but with me not being on a plane before i'm not sure.

I don't want to ruin this holiday as we've been saving up for 5 years and I don't want to get to the airport and be told I can't get on the plane because A: I'm too fat or B: I need 2 seats but there aren't any. Plus our seats are together, with me sitting next to my niece who will be 6 when we go.

I just feel that this will be ruined for us because of me. Looking at pictures on google/youtube it does show some considerably 'big' people but that's not really anything to go on. Fat people do go on holiday, some even fattier than me without having 2 seats.

Any help or information would be great.

Kind Regards,
RaZoRR

PS: Sorry if this isn't the correct board, seemed like the only reasonable board to post in.

Kudos on trying to get in shape, as well as thinking ahead for your journey. What exactly is your question though?

Not sure if it will help you with the weight loss, but if you have a smart phone, you can look into myfitnesspal.com. It makes it fairly simple to keep track of your intake.

It looks like BA packs people in, some 767 seats are down to 17 inches. You'll have to know what type aircraft you're coming over on but look here:

British Airways Flight Information

Your best bet to avoid any last minute surprises would be to call BA and explain your situation.

Check the seat comparison charts in SeatGuru
Long-haul Economy Class Comparison Charti - SeatGuru

They suggest that if you are on a BA or AC 767, you will get about 20 inches of seat width -- which is lot more than average widths that are in the 17-18 inch range.

If you are very fat, you'll lose a good amount of kg within 3 or 4 mo ths just changing your way of life.

If you are worried for the holidays, and most importantly, your health, here you have some tips.

Start drinking just water, still of course. no cokes, or any other drink with sugars. Just water, and about 2 liters a day.

stop eating ****, thats is, anything that comes inside a colored bag (no chips, cookies, donuts, and any other processed food that only have sugars). Also no burguer kings, pizza, and any other similar thing.

eat 5 times a day, but small amounts of food. 2 pieces of fruit a day, and don't eat pasta and similar at night for dinner.

No cooking with butter or salt, just olive oil (and not too much a day)

no pig, or any other food with fat. No fried food.

You can find menus online, but better to go to an endocrine

And walk almost 1 hour a day.

in 4 months you will lose a lot of fat that way

Lothar has the general idea with the weight loss, avoid the carbs really they stick in your body and cause you to bloat. Pizza, pasta, potatoes, bread and carbonated drinks are the biggest ones to cause problems so go and throw them all out now.

Meats, cheeses and greens are good in any amounts, fruits are good too, bananas, apples and grapes but don't overload on them, lots of sugars in there which can have the opposite effect, 2-3 pieces a day is good.

I know it's easy to say but the sooner you kick those bad things from your diet the less you have to worry about in the future. Last summer I weighed nearly 115kg (18 stone) I cut out all the crap and dropped down to 104kg (16.3 stone) without doing an extra exercise, just changing what I eat.

Drink lots of water, you should be getting back at least 2L a day for someone of your size. Don't drink anything else, stay well away from things like squash and especially beer, fruit juices are ok but the sugars can stack up if you have too much so one or two small glasses a day a most.

As for exercise, get out there and walk, put some good shoes and headphones on and some music or get someone to come with you and talk to them, the time will fly by, then do it again tomorrow, go explore around where you live, find a random path and see where it leads.

Hope you have a great holiday when it comes round!!

I suggest you measure yourself across the hips and see what the size is.

I have a 42" waist and I find that a 17" seat is a touch too small. I would also counsel you to watch out for seats promising more legroom. In some cases because of their positioning the tables are located in the armrest making the seat just that bit smaller, so you sacrifice one dimension for another. As most of these are beside the exits on some a/c you may also encounter a problem if you book one, as CAA rules require those sitting there to be mobile and able to assist in an emergency and it could be judged that you could have problems in this area when you board and be asked to move.

I would suggest that without hesitation you will need a seat belt extender because these seem only to fit waists up to about 42" or maybe 44" at a push.

Remember ultimately that it is a long way if you are uncomfortable in your seat so I would certainly speak to BA at an early stage.
