Luftfartsfag på UIT (bachelor) pros and cons

hello

I am 17 years old and my dream is to be a commercial pilot in a major european or norwegian airline. I would like to know the pros and cons of the bachelor degree offered by UIT (universitetet i tromsø). will you help me make the right choice:paying several hundred thousand kroner for the whole education in a private school or applying for the course offered by UIT. I would also like to know whether it is possible to get a job in norwegian, sas or other major norwegian or european airlines as a commercial pilot right after completing all the necessary hours in the cockpit and all other qualifications?

I live in Oslo, Norway, by the way.

Thanks in advance.

Start by reading http://www.pprune.org/nordic-forum/4...tfartsfag.html in addition to other existing threads on pilotforum.no, luftfartsfag.no and flightsim.no. Most subjects are already discussed there.

Pro: the education is free.
Con: it takes longer time.

In my honest opinion, you should definitely apply. Should you be one of the lucky ones that gets in, you can always decide then. Things change rapidly around here, so many of the points made in 2010 may not be valid when you start your education.

When it comes to job possibilities, we'll have to see how the first 24 of us will do in 2011.

As a fellow student at the University in Tromsø, i would definitely recommend this programme to anyone who wants a solid commercial pilot education. Although it's not necessarily a negative aspect with the education at UiT, i would say that the biggest advantage of buying the education in the US is the possibility to get extra hours as a flight instructor when you're done with your training. However, you could get pretty far in terms of a flight instructor sertificate + extra hours with the 700.000 NOK you saved by going to UiT instead..

I graduate from UiT next summer, and i don't expect to get a job right away. I'll have 200-ish hours when i'm done here, so it'll be interesting to see where we'll end up. The job market is improving, but there's really no way of telling what the situation will be in 6 months from now.

Right now, with the recession and all, the number of people willing to take the chance on a $100.000+ pilot training in the US has dropped severely (some say halved), resulting in the possibility to build hours as an FI in the US as much more difficult than it used to be, again meaning the biggest pro with the US scheme no longer is present. But, as I said, things change.

Hvorfor skriver vi på engelsk, forresten? Foreslår å gå over til norsk...

US Flight schools are filling up with Chinese and Indian students and the instructors are flying a-plenty.

Pro`s; the education takes longer, the education includes a degree from a university, the education is free
Con`s; you have to get through the hoops if you want in.

If I were in your shoes I would definitely send them an application, and attend the screening/interview if invited. I`m sure that any pilot doing training at the moment will tell you that you will start off your career by getting yourself into a very large debt. And, if you do succeed with their testing and such, and find out that this is not for you after all, then you can always decline the offer. :ok:
