Lightbulb Got a Project?

This is a new thread for any of you pilots (and airline people) who may have a project on the go, on the shelf, or on the boil and would like some feedback, some help nurturing it, or some investors (you never know).

Whatever the case, the same rules and regulations for the forum apply for this thread, so keep that in mind.

If you have a project with the airline community in mind, and would like some feedback, then now is the time.

Good luck.

I'm new to this forum but reading what some pilots have put together as projects it makes me want to get started. You got any ideas where or how you would even begin...........

Mobius: The purpose of this thread is to let anyone in the airline industry who is currently developing a project, investment or idea to post it and get some feedback.

Pilots are notorious for having so many business ideas, this is a forum where they can actually talk about it, without backlash.

A place where they can look for other people as investors, for advice, or even industry criticism, as long as it fits into the criteria, that their idea/project/investment is for the benefit of others in the airline industry.

This is the only forum on PPRuNe or for that matter anywhere I know of, that pilots can present ideas and projects to other pilots. You can say what you want about other peoples projects, websites, ideas, bars or restaurants. (provided there is no swearing, direct insults, stalking of other pilots, etc)

The goal is to discuss the good and bad ideas that some of us come up with, see which ones float and which sink.

In my case I won't be bringing up the cement furniture idea I lost big on, or all the money I put into edible lego.

Well I am not too certain whether this "project" is suitable for this forum. And yes, I have run adverts on pprune so this is not going to be an advert as you will not know the company name.

First of all, there are many aviation professionals out there who retire either early or at 55. Consider the average health of the population now at the age of 60, and I will bet that it is about the same as 50 a generation ago. When talking about aviation professionals I mean a whole host of people. For me a "professional" is someone who has loved the job they do and do it to the best of their ability - full stop. They can be ground staff, cabin staff, aircrew, engineers, technicians and even Controllers!! Yes I am guilty of the last M'Lud.

Consider the loss of experience to the industry on retiring. Consider the needs of the developing and developed world for this sort of experience. We have been there and done that.

Consider the fact that working after retirement can be fun - my rules, my way. I took over a small company this year and we are having fun as well as providing for a real need out there for experience. There are around sixty of us, all sorts, all nationalities, all backgrounds. It gets you off the street corner and out of the way of 'er indoors!

For many people the job is really a hobby and why not.

Your comments would be helpful.

I think it's a very good concept (may be partly because my career is on the back side of the power curve) and keeping busy beyond retirement is very appealing.

I know something similar to what I think you are suggesting has been done in North America but to the best of my knowledge on a much smaller scale such as a couple of experienced retirees consulting on a short or long term contract basis.

Is that basically what your pool of talent is doing?

Basically yes but with around fifty or so retirees. If you think of a French farmers' cooperative, the cooperative does the marketing for the individual farmer. This is the same, I do the marketing as well as filling in for the consultants. Currently, I am negotiating with four countries and a law firm (for expert input to insurance claims, aircraft crashes etc). We cover airport airside ops, airport management, could now cover airline ops with station managers and pilots, military ops aspects, ATC, radar, navaids, comms, airspace design, approach procedures and we work in cooperation with another company for airfield lighting and other areas that we don't cover. I have a stand at ATC Maastricht for encouraging the punters!!

The main bet that I have is that this post retirement employment will become more common as the worship of inexperienced youth reduces. In the aviation world there is an enormous market and modernisation plans are only done in countries, airports and airlines every ten years or so. The effect is that the programme manager is a virgin when it comes around - we ain't as we've been there several times over and use our lessons learned.

Well the company - a limited liability company under English registration has been running since 1985. I retired in January this year to take it over as my friend wished to retire properly, so I bought up 70% of the shares. Unfortunately my friend had been suffering from a disability for the past three or four years and the company had started to go down as well. I moved house this year so it has been a busy one for us personally. It seems as though we have turned the corner now and we are getting a number of serious enquiries from several countries, so keep fingers crossed!!

Cunim, this is one of the few forums that Airline people can talk about their businesses or projects.

To give it a boost, or at least get some eyeballs seeing what your doing, why don't you talk a little more about this company, if your looking for people, advice, investment, etc.

Maybe some fellow aviators will respond.

Ridley - OK I'll put down some links, but first for Danny Fyne I'll be advertising again so I'll donate a bit more to the web site.

Well you will find us mentioned on www.atcmaastricht.com under exclusives in the first paragraph. We are in the www.airport-technology.com site under services ATM then SAL Consultants, or just go to www.salconsultants.com which is a temporary site as I now have SAL.aero as my future main address. Just got to get enough time to play with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash so that I can demonstrate some new ideas. Question - you can land blind, whats the taxying like? I have an idea to provide "see through" vision to aircraft on the manoeuvring and apron areas. You will see a bit of it on my temporary site, but the picture takes a bit of time to download. Whilst it is mainly to do with ATM, I am trying to expand to airline ops plus incident analysis for insurance and legal argument. I have found that there is a life after retirement, the beauty of it is I can choose just who I talk to and I do it my way, the freedom is rather nice after trying to behave (not very successfully) during my so called career.

Re looking for people, yes I am short of ground engineering expertise since I want to present an idea for maintenance techniques that may reduce maintainence time by approx 30%. I do different but need to talk it through with people who actually know the problems. As I said, I need to also talk it through with Pilots as I'm proposing an airport three dimensional database for bad weather operations. Also don't forget the legal stuff needs all sorts of expertise.

I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Quick edit as I forgot to say that at the moment I'm negotiating in four countries for the advice and assistance for 1 - complete airspace redesign for capacity reasons and incident analysis tools, plus ATC licencing. 2 - new ATC system and maybe a bit of airport work. 3 - new Voice control and comms system. 4 - new airspace organisation plus SIDs and STARs for seven airports . That is on top of seeing if we can get a foothold in China. All I need now is some signatures to get the funds inbound as I have spent a considerable amount re-establishing the company.

Cheers

As an addition - here is one of the requirements I'm having to respond to. "Review the existing Air Operator manuals for possible revisions as required". This is the eleventh requirement in the document which is one of the three main subjects, the others being incident analysis, the other, airspace - complete redesign job. Volunteers?

Cunim: I'm very impressed with the technology you're building.

What areas of technology does your experise lie in? Hardware? Software? (hopefully your giving the ATC profession a much needed boost in software design)

You seem to be doing a little bit of everything, where are you heading as a group? What marketing opportunities/avenues have shone above the rest?

Thanks

Hi Ridley

First of all, sorry for the delay as I had to go to Brussels for a meeting on Thursday evening and only got back last night (Sunday).

Well to answer your questions, I am, I suppose, an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to it. I really specialise in HMI or sometimes known as Computer Human Interface CHI. The company really consists of a broad spectrum of people from all areas of aviation both civil and military. We have specialists in airworthiness, crew licencing, aircraft & helicopter operations, ATC, Flow control, Incident investigation, Safety Management Systems, Flight and radar data processing. Basically we aim to become a "One Stop Shop" for all aviation development programmes.

As far as marketing opportunities, I suppose the main area at the moment is the broad ATC developments, and here I will stress that we try to find solutions that are affordable for the customer airlines and other airspace users. It is amazing how many alternative solutions are available that can keep authorities within budget and yet give the controllers good tools and increased capacity.

Other areas of opportunity are in the investigation and advice related to accidents/incidents where we need a wide expertise.

So you see that for people who have recently retired, there is no real need to be put out to grass when the aviation world is suffering from a lack of practical hairy-chested experience that can be put to good use. Just because computers appear to be clever doesn't mean that we can rely on them doing all the thinking and work.

Cheers

You may want to weigh in on the "Other Work" Thread in this Forum where the users are debating the merits of experienced pilots who have either lost their licences medically or have retired and wish to work as simulator instructors.

If you have not already covered this profession it may provide a new niche for your group!!!!!!!

Thanks 747 Pilot

I need some expertise on the ICAO SARPS and in particular, annexes 1, 6, and 8. I am hoping to land a contract where we need to do a comparative exercise with the local documentation and legislation. This is quite a complex excercise needing somebody or people with wide experience of these areas. Paid how you like and where you like.

Sounds to me that it may provide a possibility for some users of this board to potentially benefit from your group/project by branching out into a new area.

I have been following this thread with interest, and think that you are offering a valuable portfolio of services. I think that in addition to pilots approaching (and in) retirement, there is probably an untapped resource of pilots with useful skill sets outside of their flying experience and some time to spare. Are you interested in this category of pilot?

Real Estate Developments in Spain?

If you happen to know of any interesting Real Estate Projects in Spain for sale or joint venture please let IPG know especially if they are looking to expand or require an equity infusion.

We would also be very interested in an operating Resort where freehold apartments could be sold particularly oceanfront or on a golf course.

We are in the very preliminary stages of our due diligence and would be pleased to receive suggestions from interested parties.
