I'm curious if you didn't do the required level of maths in high school can you still apply for pilot positions in any of the services? Can you do bridging courses or will they provide courses for you to get up to standard?

A C in GCSE maths is a minimum. Having a GCSE in maths isn't a guarantee that you'll be good enough either.

Today's school taught mathematics is all calculator and the like and very little mental arithmetic. MDR being the mainstay of the majority of aircrew. As far as I'm aware, all services to teach mathematics as a part of the aircrew course (RAF defintely do) but its all geared directly at teh type of mathematics you'll be using such as speed, distance time and interpolation etc.

A good book would be Mental Maths for Pilots.

I have just ordered mental maths for pilots from Amazon. Are there any really good books on naval stuff be it aviation or otherwise that people would recommend even biographies or fiction come to that? I have loads of academic texts on naval history from uni so not looking for any heavy academic writings. There's so many- I just don't know where to start. Help would be appreciated!

I applied (and passed screening) in 2002 while serving in the Army. I Had not completed y12 at the time. In fact I had only completed y10 with NSW maths in society - one up from general (vegie) maths.

At that time in service applicants for Army pilot need not have completed year 12 to undertake pilot's cse. The rules were changed in about 2003 and so I was placed on the Army y12 Cse to complete the nessesary requirements. This course no longer exists, however, it was basically the QLD OLI TAFE Cert. IV in ATP sylabus, run by the Army's Enoggera RTC. The required maths level is QLD maths B/ NSW 2 Unit.

I don't beleive the course made any difference to my practical application of maths in the cockpit (the physics was more useful) but it is a box they, and some other employers want ticked. I know of pilots with ATPL (A) and (H) licences, Uni degrees and who were already reservists who were knocked back for pilot due to lack of year 12 maths.

The exams seem to be more 'Physics' orientated nowadays, As before it was basic mathematics.

You either like 'Physics' or you don't!!

Physics isn't a problem. Just my maths isn't up to scratch
