UAS Flying Logbooks
 

Does anybody know how long a UAS is likely to keep logbooks for after the student has left? I left about 12 years ago and would be interested in getting my hands on my old logbook (or a copy or even just a summary of total hours), but don't want to ring the adj and sound like a total moron just yet.

I would guess WD that the chances are slim. We certainly don't keep them long, though most who leave the Sqn and not join the RAF are offered them to keep and they take them. Those left are of little use. Like wise, they will not have the auth shets either.

Beginning to wish now that when I left I had asked to keep it as a memento, but then again, I had every intention at the time of staying away from aviation for good. It's like a bloody drug!;)

Why not suggest to your UAS studes that they buy (shock horror) their own civil log books and keep their chocks away-to-chocks under times in them - and take them with them when they leave!

Incidentally, ALL UAS time DOES count towards a JAR-FCL PPL, contrary to what some rubber-desk Johnny blotter-jotter at the CAA (where do they get these incompetent functionaries?) told one of our recent students.......

Although they will not be staffed or resourced to help you out, you might have some success with AHB (RAF), who do have ORBs until they go to Kew. They might allow you to go in and research it yourself from the ORBs. There should be no problem, security wise (what MUAS, or whoever, were doing with Bulldogs zippety-zip years ago is of little import now). If all they have to do is take them off the shelf and plonk them in front of you.....

Anyway, the head honcho there is now a civil servant, Mr Seb(astian) Cox, and they now lodge up at Bentley Priory.

It may take a bit of searching for, but I remember someone setting up a website where pilots could put their logbooks online - it was linked to from somewhere on Pprune a couple of years ago - it might be a slim chance but if you can remember your QFIs' names it might give you some info.
On the wider topic, I still have my UAS logbook. It may just have been at East Midlands UAS, but on leaving we were told to copy the flights to a civvie logbook and have them countersigned by the QFIs, and when I later went for a PPL the CAA were quite happy to credit this time in full.

I believe that there are times in our lives when we could give ourselves a damn good kicking, and this is one of them. I have already completed my ATPL so any UAS credits have sadly been spent at vast personal expense (I don't even want to know how much beer that could have bought!), and it also only dawned on me to investigate the whereabouts of my old logbook fairly recently, long after it will have been consigned to history.:(

I appreciate the help though, and will probably approach the adj to see if he can help us out too. It would be nice just to know for sure how the hours stack up - oh, happy days.:D

I was in a similar situation to you a couple of years ago and wrote off to the UAS concerned. They informed me that they only held records for two years.

ASIs for PTC state that Auth sheets are to be kept for 12 months, so unless the unit is over diligent/just incompetent I doubt you will have much luck there either. Sorry!

they should have them still, recent or otherwise, along with that blue folder telling all and sundry how average you were. Try the adj, he doesn't know you and won't be bothered. I seem to remember London had a big cupboard of the things at THQ and one chap finding the whole shh-bang still there fifteen years later under piles of others. that said why did you leave it? -mind you if it was one of the naf orange bits of crap I can't blame you! Failing the Adj try HQ UAS'
