Who's the best - RAF League Tables

There's been a lot of F3 vs GR4 banter here lately. Let's find out for real who the best operators are (all types). From my personal experience Leuchars fighters are better than Leeming ones and GR7s and better than GR4s. Jags are somewhere between the 2 (but that's just a personal view). Some GR4 Sqns will get 3 bombers out of 4 over a target and others will get none when faced with a fighter threat. Some GR4s won't even come near a CAP while GR7s will always have a go! :uhoh:

Does anybody have any ideas for assessing a Sqn/aircraft's performance both against similar types and against an adversary? Bomber vs bomber, bomber vs fighter and fighter vs fighter comparisons for example. Whilst the ACMI is a good tool for this it removes the important factor of terrain masking (Jags and GR7s better than GR4s) and reduces the effectiveness of real-world GCI (regularly get a computer picture relayed through Showground).

What should be assessed and who would be top dogs?:=

You asked the question "Let's find out for real who the best operators are (all types). " and then limited your answers only to one or two seat fast jets, is this because your operational knowledge is such that you think these are the only RAF jets that fly operations or would you like us to include all the jets that conduct operations against opposition targets?

No insult meant

Sorry Sideshow. Whilst I didn't mean to exclude any aircraft from the list I did tend to focus on types that are able to do Affiliation sorties against other types in an adversarial role. For example a Chinook is capable of Affil whereas an E3D isn't. An SF Herc crew is but a route Herc crew isn't. If you can do Affil you can measure yourself against an adversary, including Spadeadam and Spaces.

The whole point of the thread is that we get away from the 'my mates and my plane is the best' mentality unless they can back it up with some kind of head-to-head result. :D

Who's the best

Sounds like a good idea to me. It'd certainly beat the usual 'I'm better' rubbish.

I think you'd need to limit the challenge to CR crews though. Each type could have a specific role such as point defence for fighters, bombs on tgts for the muds, evasion and collection for the helos and pies eaten in and hour for the truckies. You could post the results here for everybody to see like....

25 Sqn vs 31 Sqn:
25 Sqn 2 kills out of 4 (2 points) 31 Sqn 2 a/c over target (2 points)

Keep a rolling score and the Sqn with the best average wins the coveted PPrune trophy :} (and 2 months in the Gulf!)

I think the Chinooks would do quite well, always been impressed with the way they fly along motorways to confuse the radar picture.:E

opso 18th Apr 2003 07:36

It's not to confuse the radar picture - it's because the nav kit is so good that they're using the AA map and following the road signs!

Stan Bydike 18th Apr 2003 14:07

Radar Monkey,

It seems, without any intended criticism, that like the rest of the RAF, you have very little idea about the true capabilities of the Nimrod force !!

If you had you would realise that the truckies would have absolutely no chance when it came to pie eating:D

Farfrompuken 18th Apr 2003 16:43

Pie eating? Get real.....

Curry. Ice cream. Full english breakfast. Steaks. And thats just in the A/R track.....:yuk:

Moneyshot 19th Apr 2003 07:26

Why don't all you crabs load up with warshots, shoot it out and then see who's left? Then you will know who's best!!

Farfrompuken 19th Apr 2003 09:04

Seem to recall a time when 216 sqn ate:

4.5 steaks per crewmember, with an average finish time of 7mins 36 seconds. Meal consuption rate(MCR): an unbelievable 81%!!!

In an eating affil match with 206 sqn (Nimrods), we averaged 4 meals per crewmember(PCM), with aqn average of 9 mins 12s per crember (PCM), compared to a poultry 206 score of 3.75 meals PCM, and their average time was 18.105mins.

206 sqn MCR undisclosed.......

No accounting for hard facts.

He who eats more/fastest wins.............................................

BEagle 19th Apr 2003 20:10

3.75 chicken meals per crew member on 206? That takes some doing - sounds pretty fowl to me!

"Who's the best? Why hell, sugar, you're looking at him......":O

Art Field 20th Apr 2003 05:01

Farfrompuken. Was that a poultry score of chicken meals or a paltry 206 score of 3.75 meals......??

cpmafia 29th Apr 2003 22:18

If it's not big and yellow it's not worth flying!
God loves 22 sqn.

Hello Sweetie, still poking around, I see. I've always been miffed that you didn't take me up on my offer to meet me in that bar in Edinburgh.

But for this thread, remember the golden rule when probing for information.

"I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours."

You started this so "What's your operational status, eh?"
