Shack! Die Like The Dogs You Are !!!

Excellent article in Sunday Telegraph re F15 ops. Anyone see it?

maxburner 17th Dec 2002 09:01

Saw the article, and it made a jolly good read. Would have been much more interesting, however, if the author had been to Kuwait or Saudi, and interviewed Tornado (GR or F3) teams, doing much the same job, but in a less permissive threat environment. Once again, the MoD's publicity machine lets the side down.

As soon as media ops turn up on a unit to do some positive PR they're met with a bomb burst as all and sundry disappear to do something more important. You can't have it both ways!

You're bang on, maxburner: the lack of coverage of RAF ops in the Gulf is not down to a lack of interest from the media - every request to visit Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey is stonewalled by Northwood, usually on the basis of "host nation sensitivity". I can understand this when you read all the gung-ho crap in the tabloids, but specialist defence media get the same treatment too.
Hadn't you heard, it's all secret!

I am assuming that this is the same piece by Mark Bowden that also appeared in a US magazine recently. For the record, the 391st FS (which was the subject of this piece) was far from impressed with the final product.

Not sure what Jackonico's experiences with the RAF have been like, but I find it almost impossible to work with the Corporate Comms people at Strike. It is far easier instead to 'go direct' by approaching Squadrons/senior line officers directly.

Accordning to Strike, the RAF does not discuss any deployments to foreign soil. Too bad, the RAF needs all the good publicity it can get.
