RAF West Raynham
As far as I know, West Raynham has been listed as a "brownfield" site, and is up for sale for redevelopment, probably to be turned into houses or a shopping village. Its a while since I've been anywhere near it, but I seem to remember it is all overgrown, and most of the buildings are in a slightly sorry state of repair.

Some recent photos, I doubt whether things have got any better!

Does the nice staring man and his rotweiler give a clue ??? :( |
....but I couldn't possibly comment!!

Apparently, a week last Tuesday a man and a woman were seen hanging around there. When asked they gave their names as Mouldy and Skuller...very strange!
And on Wednesday, a fat policeman was seen picking mushrooms. Also very strange! |
and the latest.......
From the BBC(21/10):
"A Norfolk MP has said that it is a "scandal" that 100 houses at a redundant airbase have been left empty for eight years, while there is a shortage of affordable homes in the region. Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, is calling on the government to release the homes at RAF West Raynham, Norfolk. At RAF West Raynham there are more than a 100 empty family homes - most have two or three bedrooms, garages, fitted kitchens. They have been empty for the last eight years since the base shut down and they are falling into disrepair. Mr Lamb said: "It's a bit of a scandal that we have this public asset which is literally wasting away. "It is decaying at an appalling rate and at the same time we have a massive problem with affordable housing." He is hoping the government will release the houses so they can be sold to local people at affordable prices. Homelessness in this part of North Norfolk has rocketed by 60% in the last year. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said the empty homes were part of a larger site and at present the MoD was considering what to do with this site. "It would be silly to sell the homes before a final decision is taken," he said." |
------ but where else could those from Hereford and the Met practice their trade ??

....thats let the cat out of the bag. I'm off.......

west raynham
in the early nineties the runway at west raynham was resurfaced. allegedly this was so that marham could use it as an rlg when the arrows were based there. on the subject of raynhams quarters , they also had quarters at sculthorpe. sculthorpe had a naafi shop and there not many usaf bases(even in the uk) that had one of those!
|
Both runways at Sculthorpe and Raynham still quite useable, shame Marham ATC forget about the notam occasionally though
