Canberra 75th Anniversary - South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum - 11/12 May 2024
 

The 75th Anniversary of the inaugural flight of the Canberra, the RAF's first jet bomber, is on Monday 13 May 2024.

This milestone in aviation history will be celebrated at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Doncaster over the weekend, 11/12 May 2024. As well as featuring the Museum's unique collection of Canberra cockpits, the Museum will host others brought in specially for this important weekend. There will also be exhibitions and displays about the Canberra, book signings, with some former RAF squadrons intending to hold reunions. In addition, there will be a series of presentations on both days. It is also hoped that there will be a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on Saturday 11 May.

The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is a brilliant museum for families and enthusiasts alike, run by enthusiasts who volunteer to give up their time to keep our aviation heritage alive and make it available to many who are unable to visit places like Duxford or Hendon.

Hopefully the custodians of some of the dozen or so complete airframes surviving in the UK will be commemorating the date, too.

NASA & the B-57

The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum promised a few surprises for next weekend's 75th Anniversary.

One is that the Museum will be joined on Saturday 11th May, live from the USA, by Peter Layshock, Program Manager for NASA's High Altitude Research programme.

Peter will discuss how these incredible and unique aircraft are used today for numerous scientific, defence, and commercial applications. He will review the history of the B-57 as part of the USAF's fleet after adopting the Canberra B2 design, the operational uses of the aircraft, and the multiple variants that have evolved over the years. The presentation will include a deep dive into the development of the famed long-wing 'F' model, which is the only American B-57 still flown today. Peter will also discuss the challenges associated with maintaining these 60+ year-old aircraft, as well as the future outlook for continued operations.

Exact timings for the various talks over the weekend are being finalised and should be available early next week on:

Tenuous connection to Doncaster, but perhaps the 64th anniversary of this particular Vulcan's first flight on 25 May might excuse a slightly off-topic snap. Occasion was Newcastle, Co Down, Airshow 2014. Can't help with the Triangle crew unfortunately, but the chase-pilot is local-lad Mike Leckey.
