Tranche 1 Typhoons

Has the recent events in the middle east shown that there is a place for airframes that can only operate in the air to air role? Does this show that the decision to reduce the Tranche 1 Typhoons to spares is very shortsighted? Not that we could man them anyway.

they whole scrapping them part is dumb, even if you go hey we dont need. Go park them in a desert somewhere as a flyable aircraft in the future if needed

One of the greatest strengths of the US is the massive boneyard. Even last week they pulled a B-1 out of the boneyard to replace one that caught fire. Did the same thing last year B-52

I believe they're all in air conditioned accomodation as we don't have dry climate controlled open air storage in the UK.

I remember how well the Nimrods were preserved - while stored in the woods next to the sea at Kinloss!

XV249 probably had more corrosion than '666 that had ditched in the Moray Firth!

Both AUKUS allies have large tracts of deserts and aircraft storage areas

In the early 80s I worked on Lightning Storage Flight (the third squadron that never materialised) at Binbrook. We fully maintained around 10 airframes that were swopped with the two sqns and LTF to extend the flying hours of the fleet. We also looked after another 16 in storage that could be recovered in fairly quick time. At the time it was deemed a cost effective plan.

Well the Tranche 1s aren’t planned to be maintained in storage, they’re planned to be “reduced to spares” with every common part with the FGR4 stripped out to reduce the need to buy spares.

By the way, this story was originally aired on about 1 Mar after an article in the 'Mail so I suggest the threads are merged.
