Winter Camo Typhoon?

Anyone in the know, there's been a winter camo scheme , harrier, jag, and tornado etc, the training is still done out in scandinavia i'm guessing so they will need a jet, and i''m guessing with numbers that will leave only the Typhoon. With winter fighting now a stern reality again is this the reality.
who makes that call, squadron leader. station commander,

I cannot give you a definitive answer but I would suggest you consider the respective roles of the Jaguars and Harriers versus the Typhoon. I would say the current Typhoon paint scheme is just fine for any potential theatre of conflict.

It was part of the ex planning process for the Tornado GR Force. Managed to get disruptive pattern white/grey and white/green for Ex ARCTIC EXPRESS in the 90s but that was when disruptive pattern worked well at low level. As BV says, now we are at medium level (to stay - discuss?) Medium Sea Grey was the default setting of the Camouflage Working Group that was about as operator friendly as the good old Ordnance Board ;-)

Maybe more anti flash white will be needed in the future again?

AFAIK the EF cannot be repainted more than three times or similar over the entire life of an aircraft due to the sensitive surfaces. So it would be stickers only. Not sure whether it is worth it?

NutLoose 12th Dec 2022 09:19

Is that flat and paint or strip and paint?

MJ89 12th Dec 2022 09:25

was it possible, and im just guessing here, but from looks like in the naughty s (2000s) and 90s the scheme it seems to be just white added over the usual grey.

I'm sure that one year there were 2, 2 Sqn Tornados painted up in winter camo. One had the white painted over the green camo, and the other one had the white painted over the grey. I got a distant shot of the grey/white one at Spade, which I think was tail code "S", but it's on a slide and I can't dig it out right now.

Yes it was a removable coat that could be erm washed off...

Mortmeister 12th Dec 2022 22:40

Alkaline Removable Temporary Finish (ARTF) was what we used on the Harrier GR7. It was pretty robust when up in Bardufoss for a couple of months on Snow Falcon.
If memory serves me correctly, once we got home they went to the wash pan, treatment applied and ‘hey presto’ back to normal.

And not only the small ones.

That photo of Vulcan B2 XM571 was taken near Goose Bay on 7 Dec 1978 when we were taking part in a camouflage trial for HQ 1 Group. Another Vulcan crew took the photo with a vertical F95 camera.

Great fun hurtling about over the trees in response to the requests from the photo crew in the other bomber!

We were supposed to fly home a few days later, but had to burn off for a persistent starboard undercarriage red - we finally got back on the 15th but Scampton refused to stay open for the extra few minutes we needed and we were diverted to Waddington. Scampton sent a minibus to bring us back, but Waddington wouldn't allow the driver to drive to the jet - and Waddington drivers weren't allowed to drive Scampton MT! So we had to load everything onto a Waddington bus, drive over to Ops and transfer everything to the Scampton bus......

The camouflage trial was successful and not long afterwards 'Lamb Chop' flew the first dark grey / dark green Vulcan back from its major - how smart it looked!

The spotty Jag was effective.

The decision would have to come from 1 Gp.

Less Hair 13th Dec 2022 17:29

Why the Camo? For parking outside of shelters in the winter? Against high flying AWACSkis?
