Anyone any experience on appealing a Henlow medical board?
Not looking for medical advice, just the process required to appeal

JSP 950 Volume 6 Chapter 1 is the AvMed policy but I have found the Henlow team well versed and sympathetic having done three FMBs in the last 15 yrs. IIRC, JSP 950 Leaflet 6-7-7 is the Joint Service Manual of Medical Fitness. I chose not to appeal each time. Good luck.

Fairly straightforward - ask the Med Centre, the Regional Practice Nurse would be a start, if not the SMO. If not there then the Command Flight Medical Officer (CFMO) based at RAF Henlow or maybe the senior doctor at the Department of Occupational Medicine at RAF Cranwell (which is part of OASC). There is also a Medical Casework Doctor (civil servant but ex-RAF senior officer) at HQ Air who deals with such stuff. I’ll not mention known names for obvious reason, but anyone with MODNET access can find those.

Good luck. The one thing all Aircrew can guarantee in life is that eventually we all lose our medicals. Some sooner than others, but it’s a fact of life. It sucks.

I went through the FMB process at Henlow just over three years ago and put on immediate medical leave. My complex, life limiting conditions had neither been corrctly medically handled nor properly administered; indeed I wasn't medically boarded until until late stages of my EW, when I went for a discharge medical with an Army MO. The net effect was my EW was withdrawn and I was invalided some 10 months later.

I found the staff at Henlow to be very sympathetic and helpful, and they walked me through the process, including the appeals process (which I didn't need to use).

I was very fortunate (well, given the circumstances) to be given a full Service Invaliding Pension. Separately, Veterans UK determined my acute condition (Stage IV cancer) was due to my Service and therefore the pension is tax free. Top tip - make sure you speak and write to your tax office if awarded a tax free pension, as you will be taxed on it unless HMRC are told otherwise.(and see the letter from MOD)

Thank you for the replies, I’ll dig the JSP out. No issues with how Henlow have dealt with me, very professional. Just hope I can get a little flex
