WW2 Service Record - Non Relative?

I have a 1943 copy of A.P.1732B, Instructors' Handbook of Advanced Flying Training, with the name F/O G.S.Jupp on the cover.

He is mentioned in dispatches in the Gazette post-war (data.pdf (thegazette.co.uk) and has a service number of 136439.

I am not a relative of his, which I think means I can't access his service records... but I am very keen to understand what he flew and where he ended his career.

Any advice on the best way to do that?

TIA

I understand that non-NOK can obtain limited Service Records of deceased personnel, the Government portal is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/collec...ervice-records

There are a number of genealogy sites specialising in service records, but some may cost. Google is your friend. As you have his number, if you haven't already you can use that to search London Gazette records. A quick look shows he transferred to the RAFVR on 13 Aug 47, and relinquished his commission on 13 Aug 52 - so it was presumably a 5 year appointment. His first appearance in the Gazette in 1943 - commissioning?? - gives his full name as George Samuel Jupp.

I had a quick look at the 1939 Register - a sort of mini-Census to inform ID cards - and it throws up two George S Jupps. As this Register gives dates of birth, we can I think discard the one born in 1882 - a little old to be flying in WW2. Which leaves "our" George S Jupp, dob 30 Oct 20 - whose age seems about right.

In 1939 he was living with Mum and Dad at 47 Harden's Road, Camberwell, London. Dad (also George) and he were both listed as "Transport Contractors", George Jnr being specified as "porter".

There should be something to be going on there - fortunately I was in "Genealogy Mode" when I saw your post - that was about half-an-hour's searching - and no bill will be sent!!

Wow! Thank you, TH!

I’ll crack on with the link and see what I can find out.

Looks like there are two individuals with the same service number: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-not...es&text=136439

Is that unusual?

It looks like your man was married to Phyllis, lived in Rye and died in 2004.

One is an Army Number - the other is an RAF number.
There were occasional mistakes with duplication of numbers within the same service but they were usually eventually sorted out.

I had another thought: as he died in Hastings in 2004 (where he retired to?) and was in Carshalton for some years (Electoral registers) in the 50s, 60s and 70s, maybe you could contact the local RAFAs to see if they know of him.

His generation were usually great supporters of RAFA, and he died less than 20 years ago, could still be some who knew him.....

Another excellent suggestion. I'll do that.

I took a look at the government portal for getting service records, but it looks as though I would not be able to get any unit information out of them for some time (requires either 25 years to have passed since death - that'd be 2029 - or family consent to release the information).

It appears that he and Phyllis may have had a son, so I am looking to see whether I can track him down.

George and Phyllis seem to have had 3 children, 2 girls and a boy. One of the girls Christine P Jupp (P for Phyllis after her Ma maybe?) born in 1944 and the son Roger G Jupp (G for George after his Dad maybe?) born in 1952 both seem to have died - Christine in Rome! It looks as if Roger was born in Dartford, Kent, which may indicate a Biggin Hill posting for Dad? The older sister may still be alive - I'll work on that one!

[Edited to add:] Think I've found the other daughter. There's a Carolyn A Jupp born in Blackpool in 1941, about a year after the marriage (there's respectable for you!) registered with the Mother's maiden surname of Hampton, which matches our Phyllis. [Top Tip - avoid Mother's maiden surname for security uses - it's too easy to find out!]

[and there's more:] Found the whole family on a troopship (well, a ship) MV Warwick Castle, which left London on 6th April 1951 bound for "South and East Africa". The Jupps were bound for Port Said, so there would be another posting. George is described in the Passenger List as an "Air Pilot". Their last address in the UK was 11a Cranbrook Road, Bexleyheath, Kent. With luck I might find them coming home.......

Thanks, TH. This really is a genealogical adventure (have to be careful with the spelling on that one!).

There appear to be two Jupps still in Rye, so I wonder whether these are grandchildren? Am going to dig into that...

And it's more fun than the crossword.....
