That's just one of many features the makers of smart contact lenses promise will be available in the future. "Imagine... you're a musician with your lyrics, or your chords, in front of your eyes. Or you're an athlete and you have your biometrics and your distance and other information that you need," says Steve Sinclair, from Mojo, which is developing smart contact lenses. His company is about to embark on comprehensive testing of smart contact lens on humans, that will give the wearer a heads-up display that appears to float in front of their eyes. The product's scleral lens (a larger lens that extends to the whites of the eye) corrects the user's vision, but also incorporates a tiny microLED display, smart sensors and solid-state batteries. "We've built what we call a feature-complete prototype that actually works and can be worn - we're soon going to be testing that [out] internally," says Mr Sinclair. "Now comes the interesting part, where we start to make optimisations for performance and power, and wear it for longer periods of time to prove that we can wear it all day." |

I recall staffing the contentious and ponderous issue of "Contact Lenses for Aircrew" back in the late 80s. That was a multi-year struggle. I hold out very little hope for this proceeding beyond innumerable working Groups for the next 2 decades.

Does this tech actually help the pilot?
Remember reading in Vietnam pilots started turning off systems because of information overload. Human brain just can't cope. I believe the future is remote piloted aircraft using VR or autonomous pilotless aircraft. Why does the pilot have to be in the aircraft if he can experience the environment remotely? Has a lot of advantages. No G forces and no risk. Means the pilot can takes risks without fear of not coming home. Already seeing this behaviour in Ukraine with remote piloted drones. Of course I'm talking military application. Might be useful for civilian use. |
In one of the recent Dale Brown high tech thrillers the hero Col Patrick McLanahan , director of ops for the fictional HawC _(High Advance Weapons Center) at the non fictional Groom Lake ...is fitted with contact lenses fitted with gizmos such as eyes up display.....

As an early user of a good HUD in the A-7D, I saw pilots that used the "clutter" feature to eliminate the speed and altitude scales on the HUD. Later, I flew the Viper and we had a lot more things dislayed in front of us, and could not eliminate much of it.
We learned to mentally "de-clutter", but the good news was we could check certain parameters without using switches and such. The F-35 helmet seems to me to be over the requirement for data and stuff desired for weapon employment. I do not have the F-35 manual, and hope to talk with some pilots here at Eglin. I like the use of the helmet visually for off-boresight weapon employment. However, the very stable and fixed HUD in front of me seems more reliable and doesn't need lottsa alignment procedures like the helmet. Too many optical and "boresight" things to get working together, seems to me. As to the thread, I like a HUD display when I fly the Reaper drone or other UAV. The "feel" of flying something seems intuitive to a real world pilot. Not sure about the pinball wizards that never flew a real plane and pulled a few gees. Gums sends... |
