Erbil struck by missiles from Iran

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ice-Erbil.html
This just in, details unclear, early reports are that casualties are low but we'll see how later reports cover that.

Multiple rockets have smashed into a US Army base and a Kurdish news channel office in Erbil, northern Iraq.

At least five 'Iranian-produced ballistic missiles' hit the city in the early hours of Sunday, Governor Omed Khoshnaw confirmed.

He said it was not clear whether the missiles were targeting the American consulate at the site, or the airport in the city.
...
Iraqi Shi'ite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said on Twitter: 'Erbil is under fire... as if Kurds were not Iraqis'.
...
The airport in Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region, has come under attack several times in the past year, including by drones carrying explosives.

The US base is at the airport, hence aviation content is affirmed. METAR not posted to date.

Major media outlets (BBC, CNN etc) not reporting more than two hours after.
Seems very strange...

other things obviously have preference - probably most of their reporters have been moved to the Ukraine and they're waiting on confirmation from whatever news sources are left behind

News is subject to "fashion" much as everything else - we don't hear much about the Houthis or Ethiopians recently for example

I think the major US news outlets are reporting it, can't find anything on UK news.

Strategic distraction….

Surely if this is assessed to have been a deliberate attack on the US consulate, that would be the end of the Iran Nuclear talks (which apparently have already stalled over Russia's demands)?

jolihokistix 14th Mar 2022 10:07

Iran is telling everyone they aimed for Israeli compounds in that suburb.

Asturias56 14th Mar 2022 14:05

more likely the Revolutionary Guard trying to put a spoke into the wheels of the talks

But seriously, after events in Ukraine, who is going to give up nuclear capability - especially if they have a border with Russia? I wouldn't for sure

Erbil airway safety question

...
Someone holding a position of 'authority' claimed it was (twelve of) Fateh-110 ballistic missiles and suggested that civil aircraft overflying Erbil on the well-used airway would have been safe - because "The ballistic missile used in the attack flies at a maximum altitude of 26,000ft (7,925m)."

That sounds like nonsense to me. If 26,000 ft - unlikely to be Fateh-110 - If Fateh-110, unlikely to be able to limit to 26,000 ft - even if they cared.

Anyone (without breaking opsec ;) ) know any better please ?
