Unannounced French Incursion into UK airspace?
To lighten the mood.
While idly looking at ADS-B Exchange this afternoon I noticed the highly unusual sight of a Typhoon near me. On investigation Q000002/ZJ950 was pootling along at @260 knots in close proximity to and with little vertical separation from a French Air and Space Force TBM-700 (147) the Typhoon escorted the intruder to mid-channel before opening the taps and turning west to close with ZZ336/TARTAN49 aka BorisOne (ZJ950 vanished from the screen over Portland). The Voyager had transferred from a towline off the Wash did one oval track over the Channel off Dorset/Hampshire before returning to station over the North Sea. The French aircraft had penetrated somewhere east of Plymouth done a loop north of Birmingham and then headed South, the Typhoon had followed the same track from Birmingham. Any rumours, plausible explanations or actual facts? |
At the same time as the Typhoon was following the FAF TBM across the southern counties towards the south coast, there was another FAF TBM that took took off from Marham and headed across UK.
|
Nothing to see, move along. NATO aircraft doing NATO things. Sometimes OAPs need to realise 1960s was 60 years ago.:)
|
It was just QRA training.
I understand the TBM was simulating an A320 from BryanAir. |
Aircraft from friendly country intercepts aircraft from friendly country. Meanwhile......
|
Inter-operational training sorties? no, can't be anything that simple could it?
|
There was a TBM at Edinburgh the other day
|
I heard it too - intercept was more or less directly over EGBB. Did make me look up from the desk, though a shame that it was so cloudy.
Those S-bends to intercept - presumably to slow down quickly - look fun. And probably explain the noise! https://www.pprune.org/spectators-ba...l#post11194000 |

That is spelled "Azincourt", and only the brits remember it, as a recollection of their past glory. The French chose to forget, and remember Austerlitz instead.

Austerlitz? I am a little more modern and tend to remember D-Day when we bailed the French out of the poo
;-) Edit to add: with gratefulness. |

Really ? They recently spent significant sums updating the museum they maintain at the battle-field.. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47427608 |

It may be spelt that way in some places but for most of the world it's 'Agincourt'.

But it is spelt Azincourt at the site of the battle and that must carry some weight :)
would that be metric or avoirdupois?? |

Practice QRA. I've seen the Tiffies follow them back into French airspace in the past.
|
...that's just to take advantage of the Duty Free
|
I assumed practice QRA but as it started so far inland I did wonder if nos amis were experiencing communication or other difficulties e.g. equipment failure causing navigational uncertainty.
<History/Philology Lesson>Agincourt/Azincourt wasn't in France until the County of Artois was annexed in the late 17th Century, so the local language was Picard or possibly Middle Dutch, I assume the English pronunciation is due to a confusion of the letters yogh and zed - similar to the reason Mingiss is spelt Menzies.</Lesson> CT - FYI My age is on the lower side of 60;) |

Having RN heritage, we won't discuss their role in the Falklands working with and against us simultaneously. |

This forum is for Military Aviation. It is not an extension of the Daily Mail and Daily Express comments sections for the petty expression of hatred towards our French allies. Grow up.

The County of Artois (French: comté d'Artois, Dutch: graafschap Artesië) was a historic province of the Kingdom of France, held by the Dukes of Burgundy from 1384 until 1477/82, and a state of the Holy Roman Empire from 1493 until 1659. |

I can never forgive the incompetents who managed to lose half of France in the 100 years War - all the best wine country for a start....................... |
Does the winner not usually get to choose the spelling? Jus sayin....

Tartiflette Fan - a fair cop, I tend to think of the Duchy of Burgundy and its provinces as an enemy of France in the period but intermarriage caused side changes c.f. Brittany. I was more thinking of the linguistic change, more a result the enforcement of monlithic culture post-revolution.
Asturias - My recollection from studying the 100 years war at university was that many of the English barons refused to fight in and provide taxes, for putting down what was an internal French rebellion, once there was a treaty which established the Kings of England as the the legitimate French Kings. Parallel to today - it is a French War not an English one, we're not obliged to get involved. I've never understood why George IV gave up the claim to the French throne; I suppose the intention to put 'l'homme qui se dit roi de France' back on the throne made it daft. Like Lord Raglan many Englishmen still seem to conflate the enemy and the French even when we are on the same side. We do seem to have drifted along way... |

What a dull life you must lead - watching ADS-B Exchange! Go out and do something with your life my friend; we only get one, so make sure you live it to the best you can (which doesn’t involve watching ADS-B Apps!). :ok: |

Having worked with the FAF on several occasions, my opinion is that their professionalism and military skills are vraiment top notch! And now back to les branleurs puérils who are ruining PPRunE Mil these days. |
Beagle
A like before it's censored like my last post on the BA tail scrape and a reply to a question as to whether p1 or p2 would fly the overshoot.
