UK "Future Army"

adr010310-futuresoldierguide_25nov.pdf (mod.uk) Page 5: "We can no longer guarantee technical superiority on the battlefield. In the future it will become increasingly hard to move and hide as enemy sensors and surveillance systems become more powerful and their weapons will have the ability to kill with greater range and accuracy. Adversaries will continue to attempt to bypass our strengths through increasingly sophisticated and diverse methods outside of conventional armed conflict." Page 14: Shift from Close to Deep Battle "This will include the ability to attack at ranges of up to 499Km from 2024" [so perhaps less reliance on aircraft within this range band] JHC pages 96-99: 1st Aviation Brigade Combat Team 1st Regt AAC - Aviation Recce - Yeovilton 3 Regt AAC - Attack Aviation - Wattisham 4 Regt AAC - Attack Aviation - Wattisham 5 Regt AAC - Aviation Recce - Aldergrove 6 Regt AAC - Aviation Suppport (Reserve) - Bury St Edmunds 7 AS Battallon REME - Aviation Close Support - Wattisham |

Not convinced, on an aviator thread, this is relevant.

cheers To add to that, 16 Air Assault Brigade is rather dependent on Air for its unique contribution. Batco |
Popeye107 - with the greatest of respect the title of this area is "Military Aviation". JHC and the AAC are definitely 100% Military Aviation.

An instant saving is to stop giving defence ministers combat jackets to they can ponce about looking semi military.

May be Robert Ben Lobban WALLACE formerly Capt., 535701, Scots Guards aka 'Captain Fantastic' (according to the Scotsman) has his own, mind you he might not fit into it these days. His predecessor was an 'active' RNR officer on her appointment.
Back to the substance, I am intrigued/worried by the indicated restructuring of the AAC units as they will be in the same roles using the same aircraft and the same RNAS and JHC/AAC Flying Stations. (Thread drift) There is undoubtedly some disinformation in circulation: the recently formed 3 Gurkha Rifles appears to have vanished without trace; on 11/11 the then Colonel of the PWRR now Colonel Commandant of the Queen's Division Lt-Gen Chalmers (admitedly semi-detached as his day job is Master of Emanuel College, Cambridge) stated that the other four battalions of the Specialised Infantry Group, which it had been annouced would form The Rangers including 2 PWRR would keep their cap badges and traditions, a fortnight later there is the (controversial in some quarters) Rangers cap badge. |

Have had a longer look at the Future Army document. In general it looks like a PR exercise to cover up an ever shrinking force. More specifically I find it odd that:
1. No 2 Divs or Bdes (or BCT) share the same ORBAT. eg a. only 2 Bdes (7x and 16x) have their own Arty Regt. b. of the 2 Armd Bdes 1 has 2 Mech Inf Bns while the other has 3. c. Only the 2 Armd BCT and 16 AA BCT have their own Med Regt. d. No Close Sp Engr Regts in the Armd BCT. This will make sustaining a force (by replacing 1 deployed Bee with another) impossible without adding units from other Bdes. Likewise sharing the readiness cycle will doubtless see an Armd Bde at HR just when one needs a lighter force (or other variants on the theme). 2. The British Army developed commando units in WW2. The resurrection of these would have been (in my view) better than the apeing of 'Ranger' from the US Army. It might also have led to a less controversial cap badge (commando dagger in a shield) than the Selous Scouts' inspired design. 3. It's great for brigadiers and major generals. More Divs and loads of Bdes compared with now, but fewer teeth! Batco |
