TOP BRASS ON PARADE

The Daily Telegraph (24 Sep) contained two articles of interest to those who follow the fortunes of the top brass. When Williamson, as Sec of Defence, skipped a generation a couple of years ago, there were quite a few noses ‘put out of joint’ at the tops of the service trees and the article suggests a possibility that something similar could be afoot for the next CDS. However, one of the ‘candidates’ is a school chum of the prime minister!

There is no place on the list for an RAF candidate and it would be of interest to know what the rationale is at the centre.

The second bit has already been announced with the current Comdt RAF College being appointed as AOC 2 Gp and her successor at Cranwell now being nominated. This suggests that there is some game plan which in a couple of years, will pop up the first female CAS. Interesting times.

Nothing would make me laugh louder looking at the explosion of Tweets and media articles from the 1SL :p

As for the next CAS - I hope it goes to the best officer for the job. Saying that, the officer that you mention was a fine Combat Air QWI, so certainly has a good operational pedigree, but I care not what they look like. It has to go to the person that is best for the role and we should be past the male/female thing as in the 21st century most people don’t feel a need to keep heralding normal behaviour (maybe the Services need to catch up!).

B Word, please tell me you were supposed to put a backslash in and it should have read
…male/female/thing…
made me chuckle!

There is already a female 3*. May not need to wait a couple of years. Kill two birds with one stone as well - first female and first (I think….) non-aircrew.

‘There is no place on the list for an RAF candidate and it would be of interest to know what the rationale is at the centre.’

Who is CAS, and where is his media presence? I’m afraid Sir Tony has always been out and about, and has done a fair share of leadership, on ships in harms way.
Whoever CAS is, the only place he/ she/ they have been in in harms way is in a tight cockpit, leading nobody.
the thing the RAF doesn’t get is that leadership isn’t issued, like a management certificate; leadership is that ‘thing’ that managers don’t get. The tighter your office door is jammed shut the less you can boast about ‘your’ leadership credentials.
Sir Tony Radakin knew every single person on his ship, and got to know the families during a patrol.
now, back to the point about the rationale…. No RAF Officer on the horizon has the credentials, nobody was seen by government during Covid, let alone seen in action.

Which ships do you think he was on, in harms way…?!

I’ve just googled him, and he’s impressive. I do think the RN 2* also out there is an impressive player. Vice Admiral Ben King has presence, and has commanded more than a couple of warships.
Frodo, do you know any of the ‘potentials’, and if not what is your point? You are particularly naive if you think you can rely on the press for reporting on ships in harms way, fella.

Oh you’re so impressive, Sir, so totally impressive…

Clearly rude, what is your enormous point? Or, is the purpose of your point to show you infantile, which it clearly does?

I think it’s ironic that you call someone out for being naive for relying on the press yet you have to Google Radakin to see how totally impressive he is.

I’m not sure if you’re the thread clown?
I did google one, because I don’t know them, but have heard of them.
Do you ever google anything?
Are you RAF with no argument or candidate?
Time to get off your horse,, or shut up. To nit pick is boring and proves irrelevance.

Oh bless you, you poor tortured soul. You still can’t see the irony of your comment. I’m still confused why you think it’s some sort of personal insult as to why the RAF may not have a dog in the fight. For the record, yes, I have heard of them.

I didn’t ask if you’d heard of them. The rest of your post is nonsense, smacking of immaturity and of being a complete plonker (google it), most likely under a small amount of influence, pet.
Dogs in a fight and your impressive knowledge of anyone is not relevant. The politicians make the decisions thankfully, making the bar arse-to-mouth games you play irrelevant. Suits you sir.
Your failed VC10 days should be behind you now.Release your grip, let it breath and perhaps urinate from her now?

So, let me get this straight, you accuse someone of being naive by reading what’s in the media and then you have to use Google. You then start throwing insults around but accuse the other person of being immature. Finally, your messages have been largely incoherent, particularly your final one, yet you accuse the other person of being under the influence. According to you I’m also a VC10 pilot.

I mean yeah, sure, all seems legit.

I thought that ARRSE was the lowest of the military Fora on line.

I now suspect that PPRUNE is competing in the race to the bottom. Where have the occasionally sober and literate grown-ups gone? Those with a sense of humour and fairness and balance?
