He’s the gift that keeps on giving. He certainly seems to get folks all bunched up here on the prune.

SASless 30th Jun 2021 01:46

Is it "Penis Envy" that triggers folks?

10/10 for me! :)

I didn't read beyond the title. Seriously Sharkey, aren't you embarrassed?

Tall poppy syndrome or inter service rivalry perhaps. Reading his site he seems to own up to his errors, be interested to learn what has earnt him such derision on Pprune.

Reading the Nickname thread I found a less than flattering side to the UK military, not some thing I came across prior.

ORAC 30th Jun 2021 06:37

He does seem somewhat confused in his reasoning in his post.

In paragraph 5 he reports the view of USMC friends that the Falklands was the last conventional war that will be fought, and affirms his own belief/hope that that is true. Then in paragraphs 9-11 he abuses Lord Bach and AVM Stirrup for saying essentially the same thing to the HoC Defence Committee.

He then extols the power of the RN carriers as a strategic weapon without defining in what circumstances he can envisage their being used.

NutLoose 30th Jun 2021 09:10

Good to see he managed to slot in his RAF bashing..

Ignore him.

He will love all the angst he is causing.

Don't give him the oxygen he needs.

I appreciate that Sharkey is a controversial figure but I do agree with him about one thing. Ward refers to John Nott as having no idea about maritime warfare. I remember with draw dropped incredulity listening to Nott in 1982 announcing on live UK tv the sinking of a British warship but he claimed unable to reveal at that moment which one. The sheer callousness of saying that and thereby making every task force relative sick with worry was an incompetence at an off the scale level. Utterly useless. I do not know Sharkey Ward although one of my best friends was on the same squadron but I have great respect for his service. I also think he was correct in his campaign to retain the Harrier.

SASless 30th Jun 2021 13:12

Megan....the forum is RAF centric....and anytime there is real or perceived slight of the RAF in any manner causes immediate raised. hackles.

This notion of there never being a "conventional" War amuses me....as how does one know what will happen in the future?

Who would have guessed there would have been the Falklands contest or Gulf Wars One and Two?

One argument for that notion of there not being another "conventional" War is the UK Military has shrunk to a size it is no longer able to present sufficient force to be able to engage in a "conventional" War.

The USMC is altering its strategy it seems.....as it is doing away with its Main Battle Tanks and going all in for "lighter" forces.

Ninthace 30th Jun 2021 13:30

I was told by a VSO at Strike Command, who was trying to get me to civilianise more posts to save money, that there was not going to be another war so I did not need so many uniformed personnel working for me.
On my next tour, I was having to provide a steady supply people to go and earn their GSM (now OSM).

FODPlod 30th Jun 2021 13:45

Sharkey always succeeds in touching nerves certain people would rather not have. :*

Indeed. The Marine Corps is going back to its amphibious roots.

SASless 30th Jun 2021 19:11

What happened to the over-the-horizon amphibious assault strategy?

Tell us the tale of the high speed replacement Amtrac...how's that program coming along?

The Navy is wanting to keep the fleet further from shore....which presents serious problems for the OTH concept.

The Osprey has matured and the LCAC's are living up to their end of the bargain.

How does this all play out in the future....assuming a contested amphibious assault some what akin to the Falklands?

The Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and the British Army had a tough fight on their hands as they were engaged in combat at the far reach of the realm....and very end of the supply line.

As the Chinese are trying to make the Pacific into an area they intend to control....will there be future campaigns to engage in amphibious assaults on Island....natural or man-made?

"Megan....the forum is RAF centric....and anytime there is real or perceived slight of the RAF in any manner causes immediate raised. hackles."

How true, SASless, and how petty it all seems. I'd have hoped for better from professionals.

Sharky is a legend!

This guy is a legend having read his book and heard his account of his experiences in the Falklands. Nobody that hasn't been there, seen it and done it first hand real hot has a right to comment. We owe him great gratitude for what he did down there. Respect where it is due.

ExAscoteer2 30th Jun 2021 23:21

Didn't Mogwi score more victories in the Falklands than that prat?

megan 1st Jul 2021 02:26

What difference does it make as to who scored what, all served and contributed, but since you seem to make so much of such,

Ward 3 (Pucara, C-130, Dagger)
Morgan 3.5 (Puma, two Mirages, Agusta 109) - as recorded in his book, though it seems the Mirages were actually Skyhawks and one of the helicopters was given as a shared, presumably the Puma given the circumstances - was seen to crash after he had flown over the top of it, loss of control caused by vortices it was assumed, no shooting involved. It made him the highest scorer.

SASless 1st Jul 2021 02:42

We have to have Heroes.....so the rest of us can sit on the kerb and applaud when they march by.

HAS59 1st Jul 2021 03:49

Poor old Sharkey

Megan, one of the problems Sharkey has is the inability to realise that the Falklands campaign was a joint service operation, conducted from the RN Task Force. It was not a Royal Navy operation.

He’s not well, clearly, and this is his way of coping with it.

He has a drum to bang so let him bang it.
