RAF cameras/aircraft at the Falklands?

Recently seen a nice photo of one of the Vendee Globe yachts (Apivia) taken somewhere near the Falklands, apparently by an RAF aircraft. Just wondered what A/C were stationed there and what camera equipment they might be using. Photo looks too good to be taken by someone waving a smartphone out of the window?

A400 Atlas, probably. Was recently also used to take imagery of a rather large iceberg in that area... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55196220

Their maritime patrol role requires 1312 Flight aircraft to have hand-held cameras aboard. Whilst normally used by the flight crew, for specific missions they often have one of the Station photographers aboard. During my tour I flew so often on these tasks as supernumerary crew that I received flying pay.

This article reports it. I used google translate. Says it was a helicopter, the yacht skipper in turn has posted a photo of the aircraft which is NOT a helicopter. All on the page.

If you right click on the images you can "Open in new tab". This gets you a higher resolution image which you can click on to zoom in.

I’ve tried, but they haven’t retained the metadata, when they do you can copy and paste the image link on this page and it will tell you everything about the image, normally who, where, when and with what, also what changes were done to the image, see

As I recall in my time on the C130K in the FI we often took our own pics on an 'opportunity' basis. A' proper' photographer would be carried when we has a specific ship search task.
Anyone recognise the ship ?

Benzimra 10th Jan 2021 15:16

[QUOTE=ancientaviator62;10964578]https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....d20d8cfdfa.jpg
Yes .. did you?
It's a Freezer Fish Carrier, built in East Germany in the 1970's "Karl Liebknecht" type. The Soviets had over a dozen of them. They'd collect the catch from the long-range fishing fleets and take it back to Russia. That saved the trawlers going back, so they could stay on task longer.
That's a nice 'snap' thanks for sharing it.

HAS59,
many thanks for the identification. We must have been told at the time but my recollection has long gone !.

Haraka 11th Jan 2021 11:14

Indeed. HAS 59. I was welcomed on board a similar type of ship, memorably called the "Alltitz" in Ullapool, August 80.The ony sour bugger was the Political Officer.. Very basic Nav kit and running fish back in relays from Trawlers off West Africa.

I recall a Polish factory ship when I was there - '86-'87 - which was fishing for squid, specifically loligo, which may well have finished up as calamari in Europe.

She was the Gryf Pomorski (Pomeranian Griffin), fished with automated lines, and the sides were covered in ink, which the squid presumably discharged as they were being reeled in.

Things you remember.

Here she is, complete with ink stains!:

Some of those older ships were pretty rough, by the time they'd got their cargo back to Murmansk it was unfit for human consumption and was used to feed the local pigs. I used to read the Hornbeam reports from Ullapool, but I don't remember that name!

In 1989 the crews were issued a 35mm SLR. Photogs would use a hand-held F95, or a Hasselblad for better quality/colour work. I reckon life must have been pretty cheap on those old squid jiggers. During my tour our assistance to the civil authorities involved photographing the washed up bodies of several crewmen who had clearly been killed in industrial accidents. I suppose they just chucked them over the side and phoned home for a replacement.
