Adaptiv, the future of camouflage

How cool or warm ;) is this, changing a vehicle, ship or aircraft IR signature to look like something else.

I remember this technology being discussed in the late 1970s, I think in Flight International magazine.

Yes, there was a Tornado (F2 I think) put on a pole at Farnborough (again I think) with lights on along its leading edges - these lights would match the background brightness and so reduce the contrast of the aircraft shape. I remember seeing a video of the trial on an EW course many years ago. Head on you couldn’t see it from a mile away - pretty impressive, but very expensive to maintain (this is before the day of LED lighting that lasts for many years and is more robust). I guess Adaptiv has taken it to the next level - robust, light and also provides an IR capability.

The future of camo is to make the opposition believe it is there when it isn't and vice versa.

Being able to use their minds against them is way better than spending billions on equipment.

Article is slightly confusing, mentioning the battlefield in one paragraph and peace keeping in another. Isn't peace keeping meant to be overt rather than trying to make an IFV look like a cow through TI while still sounding like an IFV?

There was the trial with a Harrier ( GR5/7/9?) with lights inside the intakes - turn them on and it disappeared. Impressive with that frontal profile.

On more recent trials with tanks....https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...amouflage.html

I believe that there was a Royal Navy Trial Houdini in the 70s (?) using the F4. Same principle but the lights were connected to a rear-facing light-sensor, so that they could be varied to match the background - but I might be wrong.

I did hear in a past life that there was a proposal to put lights into the intakes of the Harrier...as the large black intakes were highly visible when head on.

If they are relying on the picture in the opening post to sell their wares they won't last long. Different vehicle, different location, different trees - unless it is a Star Trek Transporter-like device?:E

Just had a cursory Google search, haven't seen much development on the concept since the mid twentyteens. Guess it's been put in the box for now due to costs/capability out stripping the requirement perhaps?
