RN "Fly Navy" Zap
Hi - a friend is trying to ID a badge on the tail of his Bulldog - it appears the aircraft may have been 'Zapped' at Shuttleworth around 2016. Does anyone know about the badge. His description is as follows:
"'Fly Navy' at the top and the first words underneath appear to be 'Fleet Air Arm' but then they are hard to make out. The badge itself, as you can see, has red, white and blue vertical bands but there is also a motif in front of that, which appears to be a Yorkshire Rose with two sprigs of laurel(?) beneath and wings either side" Anyone have a image of said Zap? https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....ac46eacee3.jpg |
This similar design is from the grave of a former member of the FAA. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....d960f508b6.jpg |

I'm a bit concerned about the depth of his pre-flights if he's only just spotted it... |
Perhaps he has only just acquired this aircraft.
|
Did he pay the sticker price?

I always thought it was kind of odd “Fly Navy” - a bit like saying “Sail Air Force”? :)

This badge is a must for any RAF Aviator wandering around Yeovs or Culdrose (hands in pockets and on the grass)

I Belize it was Fly Navy, Sail Army and go and look for them afterwards Air Force.
|
Fly Navy, Sail Army, Eat Crab. I was told by 892 Sqn Squippers
|
... Dig Army ..........................
|
Fly Navy, Sail Army, Walk Sideways....
|
I know the Crab expression comes from the colour of the RAF uniform but I wonder how many FAA aircrew would walk up to a B52 crew and say that.
Having had some difficulties with that FAA habit both in service and later when employed by Bristows when their Shars and carrier were stood down it gave me a nice warm feeling. |
Guys the aviation pecking order has always been
1) Navy 2) Air Force 3) Professional Pedestrians Hat, Coat, Briefcase, Roller bag, emergency slide...... |
The 'Fly Navy' stickers were originally simple paper strips with gummed ends, the type you had to lick to get them to adhere inside a car window. Mid 60's, IIRC. I've got a bit of a collection going through the years tucked away in the old tin trunk!
809 left their mark on the Wardroom when handing over to the Crabs at Lossiemouth, this was a quick snap when leaving the circuit without causing too much grief from the Tower: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....33b8572246.jpg Then there was the odd RAF SAR Whirlwind which begged to be zapped :p https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....2507d0b431.jpg |
I heard the RN zapped Lord Howe Island a few years back, or left an imprint of HMS Nottingham in it?
|
Didn't they do the 'Orange' at Cranwell with weedkiller once?

But as the last FW course the finger was pointed appropriately :p |
Didn't a Nimrod have SAIL AIR FORCE in the bomb bay for an airshow at Yeovilton in the '70s, or was I dreaming?
