Not too sure this isn’t just a bit of gamification. It has a HUD for starters - no need if you have HMD (like F35). Also, where is the second seat? :)

Don’t be so hard on the wording, the Oxford Languages gives the meaning as “an organ or cell that acts in response to a stimulus.”
It appears it’s another form of bull**** speak brought about by people who seem to think using different wording to describe the bleeding obvious makes them appear more intelligent. It looks promising to be an incredible capability - IF the Government puts the money forward and IF the Government learns from the mistakes of Tornado and Typhoon, and puts the UK's requirements first. |

We're working towards our concept of cockpits without a single physical dial or screen. Instead, pilots will wear a next generation augmented and virtual reality helmet that will project interactive cockpit displays and controls directly in front of their eyes. Other pilot support concepts such as virtual assistants are also being developed and tested. This work is continuing and flight trials are now being planned to test some of these innovations in a real environment. The other question is how will you interface with it, HOTAS has to have limits as to what you can actually control via switches or do you think they will use some sort of virtual glove? I realise that you cannot fly the aircraft waving your hands around in front of you, but a conventional HOTAS for fighting the aircraft with a button to bring up cockpit mode and a single glove to interface with the VR cockpit should be doable. An interesting idea, although ejection might cause problems |
I think the idea is to offload much work from the pilot, such that even HOTAS can be simplified. Targeting where you look - so yes, through the aircraft, voice interaction with a virtual co-pilot, ai doing much of the sorting and routing - maybe even assisted piloting - transforming what autopilot really is and pointing the nose for you if it thinks it's figured out a better intercept. A lot of pilot stuff is going to come down to okaying weapons launch.
This won't just happen here, it will also happen in civil commercial aircraft, where there will be a push towards assisted single pilot with more networked airliners. |
The very use of the word ‘operator’ several times is an intriguing revelation. The pure piloting skill, even in F35 and some of our other modern aircraft, has started to be less needed. The managing of systems, whilst automation helps with the handling of the aircraft, turns future Aircrew into more systems ‘operators’ than pure Pilots. Will this 6th Generation aircraft see a new term being used for its Aircrew?
