Flanker at 10ft

While the Typhoon of the other thread was (allegedly) around the mid stratosphere, seems that this Flanker pilot decided the check whether the speed cameras were working or not.

I believe he had been landing on motorways as practice and this happened.

ShyTorque 29th Aug 2020 11:36

I'll bet he was breaking the speed limit as well...

Clandestino 29th Aug 2020 11:49

I believe that even in Ukraine road signs are removed before (planned) highway strip manoeuvres.

Background Noise 29th Aug 2020 12:04

Yes - but not the ones in the undershoot.... skip to about 1:55

Clandestino 29th Aug 2020 12:35

Thanks for the video! So the issue was being short, rather than low.

Just This Once... 29th Aug 2020 13:38

More than that - his left main gear was one side of the barrier and his right was... yikes.

capngrog 29th Aug 2020 16:59

I wonder how the "runway" area was marked, and what visual cues were provided. Were these permanent or temporary markings or a combination thereof? Would the pavement in this area need special reinforcement?

Cheers,
Grog

Looks like they'd closed off the road where it had no central barrier - but he was definitely a bit short............... I've seen a few very straight pieces of road in Russia that have been used for this - no sign of any special strengthening...............

MPN11 29th Aug 2020 19:04

I thought the big dayglo ‘blobs’ marked the start of the intended landing area? i.e. after the lane barrier.

Anyway, as nobody has said it yet ... “A bit early on the round-out, Hoskinski.

I have been involved in similar operations (ground side!) with the Swiss army and I can confirm the absence of any specific road preparation.

dead_pan 30th Aug 2020 08:13

Was this it?

RAFEngO74to09 30th Aug 2020 15:42

Looks like the same exercise but not the aircraft that was short with the undercarriage astride the central barrier.

Take a look at satellite photos of the A5 motorway in Cyprus just east of the intersection with the A1.
The central crash barrier can be lifted out of the road surface and the large roadside signs are on huge hinges.
There's another on the A1 about halfway between the intersection and Nicosia.

There were several in 'West' Germany too - a mile and a half or so of straight autobahn with paved central reservation and removable central barriers and a rastplatz at each end.

I see that. Looks like a nice straight run of 8,000 ft. or so. Are the 100 ft. square paved areas at either end meant for hardstands?

OMG - not much margin for error going over the edge of the bridge if they was a nose wheel steering failure !

RAFEngO74to09 31st Aug 2020 01:42
