Like as the article states, not so different from EG&G now URS Corp operating the JANET Airlines T-43 now 737-600 out of McCArran flying to weird and wonderful places in the Nevada Test Range complex ...Groom Lake is probably only the tip of the iceberg..l

Also please check out another mystery NT-43 ...that has frequented Tonopah Test Range et al...and if you oook back at Google Earth, it’s been seen on Tonopah ramp.

In January this year I had dinner with a group of people, among whom was someone who had quite a bit of first hand knowledge about signals intelligence and electronic warfare.
While not giving away anything he shouldn't, this person said the average punter doesn't really appreciate how much jamming capability the Chinese have.
As the author speculates, I suspect this jet is testing technologies to be used in environments where positioning, navigation and timing are completely denied.
Probably B-21 related.

Quite possible. The very first 757 (NA001) was retained by Boeing - back during the F-22 development it sprouted some strange looking wing like extensions and other appendages near the nose. Supposedly it was being used to flight test and develop some F-22 software.

I want to say the 757 mods make it look ugly, but in a weird F-4 kind of way, I like the look.

There must be easier ways to provide some rain cover for that forward door....

What an unjustified canard.......

IIRC way back Fairey Surveys operated a DC-3 out of White Waltham that was used to "pre-test" early versions of various camera and recce systems for the boys at Farnborough and Boscombe - that apparently had all sorts of strange cut-outs and holes.

They really wanted a 737 Max but had to make do with this.
