Battle of Britain/Dam Busters/Great Escape Films - good site to download/stream from?

Semi-locked in here in Canadia. Anyone got any good streaming sites etc where I can watch these?

Films of this quailty you really ought to have on DVD/BD!
(Be careful where you get The Dambusters from - some US versions call him Digger!)

If you want a decent war film, Sky has Iron Fury on movies at the moment that I found entertaining and different, it’s Russian made but in English. About a T34 crew.

The Battlefield series available on the Tube are good. Battlefield S1/E1 starts off with the Battle of France and the series goes all the way through to S6/E6.

A Bridge Too Far and The Battle Of Britain is available via Amazon Prime.

flash8 4th Apr 2020 15:43

torrent sites the largest in the world, and the best in my opinion is rutracker.org

yes, the site is in Russian, but for those that don't understand the language simply use google translate (in the chrome browser at least) to register and browse.

All the films have the Russian language added, but a significant majority also have the original English track embedded and English subtitles for other films.

The site has literally everything including your wishes. Good luck.

Many such films are on YouTube such as Bridge too Far. Obscure ones are also there an example being the comedy Very Important Person 1961 which is good for a laugh. Really though you have to go to torrenting. I can't post links but in the UK a lot of sites are blocked so I use a VPN browser called Epic. Pirate Bay is still great but you may still have to use a proxy site of Pirate Bay. Download torrents using µTorrent.

Isn't torrent classed as illegal pirating?

Typhoon Tripacer 4th Apr 2020 20:08

@pr00ne There seems to be something of a change of attitude in the UK. I don't think any UK internet provider now look to stop amateur users though legally it would be a grey area. Canada could obviously be different.

Widely available on torrent sites but can be classed as piracy. Also will depend on your level of computer expertise as downloading pirated content can open you up to virus and malware. Also many torrent films do not come with subtitles so you need to know how to add them yourself.

I'm not sure that the forum admin will be keen on publishing the address of any sites but if you want to PM me....

Several good war flicks on Amazon Prime (and some not-so-good ).
I was all set to recommend "Doolittle's Raiders: A Final Toast" which I originally watched on Amazon - superb, it literally brought me to tears - but Amazon says it's no longer available :uhoh::
(I now have it on DVD, but that won't help you much...)
All that being said, what BEagle said - just buy them on DVD/BluRay...

I missed this last night, it’s repeated on PBS FreeView in the UK today at 1050

https://www.pbsamerica.co.uk/series/...eckoning/#3933

It tells the story of the post war manhunt for the perpetrators of the massacre of the recaptured airmen.

Regarding A Bridge Too Far, TIK, on youtube takes an in depth look at Operation Market Garden;

tdracer 19th Apr 2020 18:54

For those of you with access to Amazon Prime, they have the first season of "Battle 360" which follows the USS Enterprise through WWII - the only US carrier to see action in every significant carrier battle during the Pacific war.
It's pretty good, I watched the first three episodes last night - lots of interviews with the original WWII pilots and crew. Unlike Hollywood, it's also factually accurate.
However they have the episodes miss-labeled - episode 3 is really episode 1 and visa-versa.

On BBC Radio 4 last night, approx 40 min's. "Irans Long Game".
"In this documentary for BBC Radio 4, Owen Bennett Jones goes back to 1988 when Iran was forced to accept a UN-brokered ceasefire in its bitter eight year war with Iraq. He charts the complex interplay between Baghdad, Tehran and Washington ever since. Even opponents of the Iranian regime described Qasem Soleimani as a giant who had helped defend and advance Iranian national interests and as someone who took on the greatest power on earth – and seems to have outwitted it."

Question:
I was watching "Sink the Bismark" last night. In the movie, there is a scene where the Bismark blows the bow off (and presumably sinks) a British Destroyer as it was making a torpedo run. I've read and seen a fair amount about the Bismark story, and other than the movie I don't recall ever seeing any reference to any British ships being hit or sunk by the Bismark after the battle with the Hood and Prince of Wales.
So, did that event actually happen, or was it a little artistic license by the film makers?
