The report says 66% of outstanding deficiencies came to light in the last two years, and 22% are “Category 1’ or “Category 2” problems. |

What capability?
The UK declared the F-35 operational even though the fleet was suffering from availability, infrastructure, logistics and security issues, auditors have revealed.
The UK National Audit Office (NAO) found that the December 2018 initial operating capability (IOC) from land bases was granted with 67 exceptions, with almost one-third of those still yet to be resolved more than a year later. It is not clear on how many criteria IOC (Land) was judged, but the process is common practice, officials say, noting that waiting for all issues to be fully addressed before declaring the aircraft operational would “needlessly withhold” the capability from the front-line. One of the pre-production aircraft, it's been at Siskin/SFDO since the 90s. There's a dozen or so old SHAR, plus some Lynx and a Sea King or two lurking in the hangars. Used to be some old Wessex as well back in the day.
Demobbed - Out of Service British Military Aircraft SFDO use the first pre-production EH101 and an engineering training mock up airframe that looks convincing from a distance. Sadly the Wessex have long gone, most of them to the fire dump down the road at Predannack. Digression over, back to pointy whizzy things. |

USMC cutting their F-35 buy by about 120-130 aircraft.
It is being inferred they are binning their entire F-35C buy (which would fit with operating the F-35B from the America class in littoral waters or from onshore). I don't think the final numbers are in yet, ORAC. That's for the "mix". As with the F-4 way back and the USMC buying Harriers at the same time, getting to the required/desired mix takes some time. Then we had the Hornet and Super Harrier mix in the 80's. Now we have the Bee and the Cee mix lately. What the jarheads come up with is gonna be interesting. They moved out ahead of USAF early on, and left our local training base ( Eglin) for S.C. and AZ. Then they actually deployed to west PAC and have been flying there from land and a gator navy boat. As far as ALIS goes, the system prolly needs more management attention defining the maintenance issues ALIS was intended for than the data-gathering capability it has. It sounded great when briefed ten years ago, but has been a problem compared to the way we did things for the Viper and Hornet and Eagle. Meanwhile, the Stubbie is doing work in Iceland that has become interesting. The handoffs between the RNAF Stubbies outta Iceland and the RAF folks has been very smooth from what we are seeing. Your 'bold' weemonkey. Nothing untoward in any of this. Security issues are just that - you'll never likely know. As the GR1 desk officer in MoD, I did know those (very few) that were applicable to GR1. After IOC, all were resolved in timely order. |
