Former fighter pilot picked to lead British military’s space command

Got to love the picture; two Americans both dressed the same, five brits 4 different standards of dress. Not very 'Uniform' ( Also, why is it the older I get, the more I notice these things, I can't remember giving two hoots about it when I was younger!!!).

I take personal pride in never dressing exactly the same as a colleague. Thrills me to the bone knowing it winds some up..... :E

"Creation of a new Space Command and setting up of a Cabinet-level national space council are among the initiatives being pursued by the British.

On the capabilities front, new Skynet 6 communications satellites, planned new ballistic missile defense radars, the possible creation of a UK Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), surveillance and reconnaissance assets, and space-launch systems are on the agenda."

Where is the cash going to come form?

West Coast 16th Jan 2020 13:46

Harry will be off the dole soon, that'll help with the finances.

"Mavis, pop down stairs and tell Boris we have incoming...ohh and Mavis be a good dear and pop the kettle on while you're there, I have a feeling we are going to have a power cut."

The defense space portfolio is expected to be worth at least £7 billion, or roughly $9 billion, over the next 10 years as related capabilities move closer to the top of Britain’s military agenda.

Space operations will continue to be conducted by the Royal Air Force.
Surely it should be the Royal Airless Force.

Harv Smyth is a great choice, a thoroughly nice bloke whose next appointment, without a doubt, will be CAS in 2.5 yrs time.

Buster Hyman 17th Jan 2020 00:18

I think there's precedent to variety in the uniforms though...

You'd really expect more accuracy from the press, Smyth having never been a fighter pilot, he's only flown mud movers!

The way people are voting with their feet, it will soon be the Royal Hairless Force.:E

Heights Good, are you Harv Smyth? Disgraceful self-promotion if you are... :E

Fixed that for you, assuming you're counting the junior naval officer! More "types" than "standards" too imho....

Asturias56 18th Jan 2020 08:24

Rumor has it the Nigerian Defense Space Administration is filing a complaint with the UK Foreign Minister re "poaching" of NDSA Staff by the UK Space Command.

Any truth to that?

He’s a hell of a nice bloke. He has that certain ‘thing’ where you can’t help but like him.
Definitely the only quality, personnel minded 2 or 3 Star we have at the moment.
He was a great Sqn boss too. When a Sqn is happy they’ll do anything.

Could be the last? 18th Jan 2020 20:28

CB,

Agreed. Although, with all the ‘Space’ work going on in the Cap area, I thought that there might have been another 2* lining himself up for that role....guess not!
