Looks rather more hi-tech than those keep-the-dot-in-the-middle 'stick and rudder' things at OASC!
Relatively low cost way of developing many useful contemporary skill sets - provided that it doesn't trivialise death and destruction. The RAF has come a long way since the ridiculous days when aircrew were expected to knock each other senseless at boxing contests. |
As alluded to, it may have some benefits in terms of developing motor skills, decision making etc, but there is no way on this planet you can describe it as a sport. Sport was what we all did having been hounded out of our bedrooms by parents for playing computer games for too long when we were kids. Next week, darts and dominoes admitted to the Olympics. |
Does this mean that there will be an O i/c gaming and that sections will be expected to release personnel on Wednesday afternoons? Angling and 10 pin bowling were bad enough.

So you might have to release entire sections to provide support on ‘games day’! Will it qualify for an RAF Sporting Blue I wonder? |

This follows up from a Gaming event called Insomnia where 22Gp set up a combat flight sim stand under the RAF banner. I don't usually post as currently serving, but knowing some of the effort put into this by individuals, I thought it deserved a well done. Having manned a recruiting stand at Airshows, it was interesting to compare the footfall with the e-gaming event. Young people were queueing up to get on the stand and at points, the staff were advising gamers to come back when it was less busy. It never got less busy! I understand from a recruitment and PR perspective it has been perceived as a success, hopefully to be repeated. Involved in current FJ ops and with a hand in the training pipeline, I don't mind if our future applicants are Airshow groupies, UAS undergrads, Air Cadets, film buffs wowed by the new Top Gun film or RAF e-gamers, as long as they sign up. Well done RAF Recruiting on an innovative and effective idea. SP6 |

The scene, F1369 time, interview with flight commander "Pretty good overall, TTN, but I have marked you down on physical fitness" "Why is that sir, I'm never off sick or unfit to fly?" "True,but you're not very sporty - you don't take part in any sporting events for the squadron" "You mean like Flt Lt Bloggs?" (keen jock strapper) "I guess he wouldnt be getting marked down" "Well obviously not, although I cant discuss individual cases" "So that would be Flt Lt Bloggs who has been off the flying programme for two months recovering from an injury sustained playing rugby?"
