Do any forumites have any updates on the future of Colerne as an airfield? I understand the BUAS flying element will be relocating to Yeovilton from Boscombe in the near future, the admin will also move out of Colerne.

If you're alluding to access to the now declassified Burlington Bunker I think it's unlikely. Although I agree you can never be certain as the Box, Rudloe and Corsham area was riddled with tunnels. Colerne is some 4 miles or so from Rudloe with a significant valley between them. The reference to a "Nuclear Bunker" could have been to a hardened or reinforced station ops room perhaps? Whilst I’m not in favour I suspect the airfield will be developed for housing. I could imagine a doubling of the current number of properties but perhaps not the usual density. Possibly with improved access to the A420 north of the field (maybe fill in the valley a bit at Doncombe Hill with some HS2 spoil).

I left the village late last year and there was much talk about the airfields future. There was very strong opposition to housing, as Aeronaut alluded to, the roads in/out are awful (Duncombe Hill, Batheaston Road, and the road to Ford) The place frequently gets cut off in winter as the council do not grit or clear any of the roads in. The village didn't want housing as the school and amenities would not be able to support it. There was a very strong rumor that one of the wealthy locals (of which there are a few), would be willing to buy it and leave it as is rather than swamping the area with 'incomers'.

That’s a nice rumour Higthepig. When will they be famous?
As an alternate option I could imagine say, just 10 self build plots with the runway as an access road . The runways and taxiways already divide it into 10 plots. Add a few trees it will look like Lucknam Park’s driveway in 200 years! Would add little by way of traffic and other pressures but would make for a very classy “estate”. |
Aah, Lucknam Park. The hotel has one of the nicest landing helicopter sites in UK.

Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) and Midge Ure lived (or used to live) in Box, just down the road from Colerne. Box Tunnel was a massive arms depot in WW2. RAF Box later became RAF Rudloe Manor if I remember correctly.
Colerne was a great village to live in (1970s), The Fox & Hounds was a lively local, The Six Bells not quite so... Yes, winters could be a bit tough, no easy access when Bannerdown Hill was blocked by snow. |

I was in the Fox & Hounds the Wednesday before Christmas to celebrate the life of someone who had served at Colerne. 7700 |
