Jeremy Hunt: I would spend £15bn more on defence

From the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48752226

If asked for a comment, Boris Johnson would probably reply "Err...err...buller buller buller. Err...what's defence and what's in it for Boris?"

ORAC 25th Jun 2019 07:45

Election promises to a constituency he knows are in favour of defence spending.

I don’t believe it any more than I believe Boris’ promise of changing the upper tax threshold aimed at the same people.

Verbal contracts not worth, as the saying goes, the paper they’re printed on.

pr00ne 25th Jun 2019 09:08

To be fair to him he has been consistent on this from before the start of the leadership bid campaign.

Tankertrashnav 25th Jun 2019 09:52

At least he mentions defence. With most it's the usual litany of health, education, health, education, with occasional mention of the police.

racedo 25th Jun 2019 11:28

Basically - I need a war to prove myself just like Call Me Dave did in Libya. It doesn't matter how many people die as long as it shows me up.

Wander00 25th Jun 2019 11:31

Well, that would help clear the deficit on the defence account......

lightbluefootprint 25th Jun 2019 12:24

To be fair, Hunt did procure similar additional structured funding in the NHS albeit balanced against targets being achieved and reforms. Trouble is that with the shrinking of the Forces, there are fewer economies to be made.

No fan of Cameron (given Brexit, am NO fan!), but he didn't go looking for a war in Libya. The UK, France and the US intervened to prevent a bloodbath in Benghazi. They/we got the job done with the minimum of casualties, and oversaw the establishment of a democratic government that functioned for close to 6 months. That the course of the country has not proceeded as well as might have been hoped since then is regrettable, but the Libyans themselves bear much of the responsibility for that.

Libya

You obviously didnt know of the conversations between Sarko and the yanks re stealing the gold and silver that had just been moved from Tripoli..of course it involved B.Lair and the french backing up the US in north africa..democracy..nothing to do with it.

melmothtw 25th Jun 2019 13:39

Send me the minutes of those conversations please, blind_pew. Would love to read them.

BS................. So where is all the money that UK sequestrated from Libyan sovreign account ? Oh yeah it is resting in British Government accounts.

There was no bloodbath planned but hey its up there with WMD's in Iraq.

Uk helped the introduction of open air slave markets, mass killings and robbery, because Libya requested the Oil companies paid a couple of billion more from their super profits with oil at $100 barrel and Sarkozy was warned that the millions he got from Libya for his election campaign would be publicised.

Libya functioned as a country before UK/France supported Islamic fundamentalists in their takeover of the country. No surprise that it was benghazi area that were supplying Fundies into Iraq to attack British and US Forces, soon as they went home they became UK/US friends to overthrow Gadaffi and destroy Libya. Really worked very well didn't it.

melmothtw 25th Jun 2019 15:06

BS indeed racedo. Never anything to say about Putin or his ilk. Stop The War? Stop The West, more like.

Planet Basher 25th Jun 2019 18:34

I find it difficult to take the word of a man seriously when he can't fit his own toupee properly.

Tashengurt 25th Jun 2019 21:40

Easy to promise things when you're in oppisition.

Phantom Driver 25th Jun 2019 22:34

Just to lower the tone a bit , hoping Hunt gets the nod and Penny Mordaunt stays in post . She's a smart lady , and besides, something about (milf) comes to mind....
God forbid GW (BoJo supporter) returns to the post to torment us .

weemonkey 25th Jun 2019 23:34

Sure he will.

Right up to the moment he follows mother may to Brussels.

PS Boris is a clown.

TBP for change.

Well I'd call myself a peacenik, one who believes that strong defences make for peace. As Teddy Roosevelt said "speak softly and carry a big stick". A pity some of his successors forgot the "speak softly" bit. Defence of the realm is the first duty of governent. Most administrations would say they agree with that but how many do any more than pay lip service to the sentiment

jindabyne 26th Jun 2019 19:03

Gets my vote. Oops - I don't have one.

Happily marched in Stop the War in Lodnon in 2003, Corbyn did as well. Who was right Stop the war or those in favour of it?

Love how the Torys abuse Blair because he started the war and abuse Corbyn because he was against it.

Who invades and destroys other countrys and then claim doing it for democracy ?
