Allowing for media hyperbole - would that be the most aggressive action in the region to date?
Or does this sort of thing happen all the time?

No idea whether this is routine practice, but Vardo's location practically begs for this kind of stunt, an exposed peninsula pointed at Russia just over the horizon.
Interestingly enough, the town tourist office has lots of brochures detailing how the desperate poverty of the region was alleviated by the development of trade with Russia beginning in the mid 18th century.
So I don't think the locals are quite as concerned as NATO might be..

Ivans attack Vardo using tactic that Icarus could have devised...

I was up that way a few years ago and there 4 guys waiting for a connection to Vardo.

in civvies but Americans and military haircuts. Lots of yes sir-ing for a civvy. The older guy was apparently Mr. Admiral from the way one of the juniors addressed him

Suggest that you double check for monsters under the bed before you go to sleep tonight, and try to remember that the dark thing following you around on a sunny day -- that's your shadow, not some American spy. :ugh:

I was actually sympathizing with the guys at Vardo - I'm sure they'd rather have a spoof Red attack any time that a visit from the Top Brass...................

And the admiral was Top Brass..... for sure - the local guy I was traveling with said NATO visitors drift through pretty often - and of course they do rather stand out amid the assorted fishermen and reindeer herders that are the main customers up there.
